I cannot get enough of B58 liner power delivery in my 2017 440i GC. The best engine I’ve owned.

My G05 X5 40i can get 31 mpg if I stay within 70mpg all the way between Norcal and SoCal on a good weather with no traffic (achieved this during the Covid). Not surprised.

Sounds about right - my 23 m340i has averaged 28.1 mpg since factory (2300 miles). Will probably get better once the engine loosens up a bit as well. It’s a stellar power plant, although I don’t love the mild hybrid stop start. Depending on throttle position it can be a bit jerky when coasting to a near stop then accelerating again.

That’s the point though. If that’s all you care about you can buy something cheaper and less powerful.

The impressive part is that it performs like a BMW and produces real power and is still capable of this efficiency.

Personally, I drive too aggressively in town to get it. But my 540 would do 500 miles on the highway even with me going 80-85 cruising speed.

Hell, I got 28 mpg in my M550 on a trip over this last weekend. In town… I get like 17 haha.

I loved the B58 in my 540 and it’s impressive in our X7. It’s an all time great for sure.

Eco pro allows you to coast efficiently, which can help at low speeds city traffic and a bit at highway as well.

In eco pro on my M340i, I can easily get into the low to mid 30s mixed. High 30s mostly highway. Even hit 41 once briefly during a highway drive. For a nearly 400HP engine with no hybrid powertrain beyond a 48v MH, that’s impressive.
What about battery charging? I thought our batteries recharged via regen braking. If you are coasting in Ecopro, are they still getting charged somehow?

I’m getting 16 in city. Kind of disappointing so far tbh! Will need to rack up more highway miles.

I’m not sure about that. Yes it’s powerful but reliability is questionable. Fuel economy is because of aerodynamics more than the engine. Personaly I like more B47 and B48 in combination with RWD.

No surprise really. My pre-LCI non-mild hybrid 540i gets 33+ mpg cruising at 80 on the highway in comfort mode. Worse in eco pro so I never use that. I have multiple 1000 mile trips doing this where I will get 525-550 miles per tank. Overall I’m getting 22-23 but I drive too aggressively for better mileage. It’s not why I bought the car but definitely nice benefit.

Reliability does not seem questionable at all. You really never see any discussions of engine issues in the G30 forum on any of the G30 engines. The only common issue is with the cooling system, particularly the lines, which were addressed on the LCI.

Also, I get great mileage on the highway with my X7 also, and that’s a much bigger and heavier car with the same engine.

I don’t get the folks that want to talk down this engine. I don’t even have it in my own car anymore, I traded it up for the V8. It’s not bias, it’s just objectively a really great engine that executes on multiple strengths.

Here it is next to G30, and just for giggles the Lexus ES 250, a naturally aspirated 4-pot.
Hmm, my 2019 540ix M Sport was getting 32-33 Mpg highway all day!,...so, what is the EPA say'n????

If only one engine ever in all past and future BMWs,...I'd cast 1000 (squared) votes for the B58! It is no doubt the best modern day new power plant on the planet! Full Stop!

Take the 1st Gen B58s,...hit it with a $450 tune,...gain some 60-80hp,...100+ LbFt of torque and zero hit on fuel economy when not driven like it's stolen! Crazy mad science!!!!

Those with the 2nd Gen 2020 B58s are easily seeing well over 400hp on Stage 1 tunes,...and this is what makes the B58 the most respected BMW ICE on the streets. If ya don't know,...now you do.

Oh! Notice I didn't have to mention 'reliability'! The thing is rock solid!!!!

I get between 25-26 mpg in mixed driving around town, all day long (pre-LCI, non-hybrid). I usually get around 30-31 mpg on road trips (but I tend to keep the speed up there).

I've always found the B58 to be one of the nicest, easiest engines to live with. So smooth, really no turbo-lag to speak of, and just a pleasure in daily driving. Compared to my wife's Porsche Macan S 6 cylinder, it's like night and day... while the driving dynamics of the Macan are sublime, the engine is... full of lag. It's hard to drive that thing gracefully. And it consumes oil regularly, unlike the B58.

Relability is questionable ? Says who? No it is not because of aerodynamics. A 330 and 340 are the same body but the b58 obviously has substantially more power with minimal worse gas mileage than the b48.

It is a very impressive engine.
