Native nav system seems way better than in prior 5 series
In my F10 and G30 I got very used to using either Google maps or Waze on my phone because whatever algorithm BMW was using was not good at all.
I've been very pleasantly surprised by the current routing used with the BMW nav system. Hasn't let me down yet. I wish it had crowd sourcing abilities so it would alert you to where cops were like Waze, but, other than this, it functions extremely well. |

Agreed. it has ben good enough that I actually don't use Car Play at all anymore, though I might use Waze for road trips.

I also use it all the time. Works well, and the only one that works with preconditioning for charging.

I use it preferentially as well. Apple Maps has all that tree detail and stuff I don’t need to see.

I'm also enjoying the built-in maps! Especially the 3D preview of some intersections.
But often the guidance as to which lane we should be in disappears. Will need to play with the settings to see how much can be customized and turned on permanently. Also in British English mode, it can't pronounce domestic Japanese place names very well, but it does at least try! |

I feel like I’ve gamified the nav system - I always enter the destination for anything other than small trips and then see if I can arrive with a higher %SOC that it predicts (i5 only, obv)

I still use Waze. This GPS tries to take me to an alternate route when going home which is completely out of the way.

I use BMW nav for longer trips that I will need to charge up on the way. Going 427 miles up state NY the BMW nav was a must. I did however keep waze open on the smaller right section of entertainment screen and my media on the left. This way waze always shouted out any pertinent information even though it was not being used for guidance. PS: I also love the directions on the heads up display with the BMW navi.

This was a little tricky to set up though because if you do the BMW nav before the waze and media are set up the BMW nav will no longer have a destination input and you must re-enter the destination on the BMW navi. My 5-0-5 gesture is used to open the BMW nav for this reason.

The process
1) Ensure android auto is connected. 2) Press media button on center console. The media player (youtube music for me) and waze should pop up on the infotainment screen. 3) Open the BMW navi and input address using infotainment screen. 4) Set heads up display to show the navigation. 5) Press the media button on center console again and you are done. 6) DO NOT PRESS the nav button center console at any time or the BMW nav will lose its destination and you will have to start from step 1 again.

I ignore all the nav yelling and screaming at me and when I get out of the neighborhood it then correctly adjusts the route. |

One tip we found: press the home button and then with the map on home and the widget on the side, switch to the widget that shows upcoming turns and lane guidance. This seems to show multiple upcoming turns and maybe shows lane guidance more than the map on its own.

What I very much dislike is having to swich between Carplay and iDrive. Unless I am missing something, you have to go to the device, uncheck carplay and recheck two phone settings. I use one of my memory buttons to quickly get me to the device but it should be able to be accomplished simply by clicking on an icon which toggles between iDrive and Carplay. |

My car knows 3 phones and when we are all in the car, it will pick one at random. So, I prefer just keeping it off, then going in and manually selecting which one to connect.
