Even on a long journey at a steady 70-75mph it returned 2.9m/KW.

What exactly have BMW changed?
There is probably different battery management software for the i4 vs the i5. There was a rumour about the i4 getting the i5 system with the bump in horsepower for 2026 model year,

Today I did an efficient mode experiment in my i5 M60. I drove 7 miles to Cycle Barn and 7 miles back home. Mainly downhill in one direction, I got 4.2 mi/kWh. Uphill heading home, I got 3.5mi/kWh. I did max efficiency as it was a high of 57 and didn’t need the heat or the A/C. My car was at 58% battery and it said I had 204 miles of range. Other than sluggish acceleration, it seemed worth using for local trips with a 30mph speed limit. I even let the car drive itself part of the way.

I should probably try this out for one of my local trips to the tennis courts. I drive this route 2-3 times per week and it's about a 10 mile trip each way. The max speed limit for much of it is 50 mph. Typically, in Personal mode I average about 3.3 - 3.4 mi/kWh.

Your test has inspired me! I will try it this coming week and see how it does on a 50 mph limit trip.

In heavy traffic on my way to work or home here in VA, I’ve used max range mode when weather permits and it’s not too hot. It’s great and makes my efficiency much better.

I drove to and back from the tennis courts yesterday in efficient mode. Made no difference to my mileage - I still got 3.4 mi/kWh. I did not turn on the extended range option for much of it though.

I suspect that my normal driving is already pretty efficient. I'm not a fast driver and I don't usually accelerate too quickly. Maybe I need to try the entire round trip with the extended range turned on (as long as it's not too hot).

My personal car is a 2022 G80 6MT

The I4 is very impressive with acceleration.

Other than that it has ZERO appeal to me.

As a daily driver my M3 is more spacious and more comfortable and obviously handles and feels better.

On bumpy roads M3 is a 7.9 ride quality

The i4 a 6.0 on bumpy roads

I was surprised my M3 was more compliant and felt solid compared to the heavy I4

Forget the aggravation of an EV.

The I4 did not appeal to me.

The suspension felt like it had 15 inch rims with 60 PSI on cut springs in some circumstances

I’ve also driven newer 2020 540i that’s a really nice car. Would take that over i4
And 2020 540i over a i4 M50?? Wow, polar opposites of what most feel. Getting into a gas 5 series was a complete downgrade in ride comfort and quietness. Not to mention the gas engine feels completely archaic compared to the M50. It's great to have gas engines around, because it is rather entertaining listening to them wailing/whining next to you when you effortlessly/seamlessly accelerate away from them. You like directness? There is no gas engine with the instant torque or response of the EVs. The M3 rides better, and has more practical room? Not even close. The M50 has adaptive air suspension. Are you sure the i4 you drove didn't have shipping spacers installed so something? I can carry a full desk in my i4 easily. Not a chance in the M3.

If you are so focused on handling, EVs are fine for 90% of the population. The i4 M50 handlily beats a much lighter M240 on a road course, still pulls .97g, and has actually beat the M3 in stopping on several reviews. It's not terrible like you seem to state. It was good enough to make Car and Drivers 10 best list, and JD powers #1 EV owners experience award. The new Taycan Turbo GTS EV beats any other factory BMW on the Nurburgring by a long shot. Enjoy your M3, but I definitely would rather own and drive a performance EV. Because in the real world, the gas car feels like a dinosaur.

Anyone tried the maximising the range on the Efficiency mode, I tried this for a laugh the other morning.

When I drive it in the regular Efficiency mode to work after I have topped it up I always get 3.0-3.1miles per KW but when I did the same with the maximising the range turned ON I got 4.1miles per KW, that's a heck of a jump.

I know it turns off the Air-Con etc but if you need the extra range it's amazing.

Yes, it extends the range by quite a bit. It’s warmed up to the mid 60’s and I don’t need the heat or A/C.
