“You’ll own nothing and be happy.”
THIS is the only thing we really need to know moving forward. Our future is being written for us by people with their own interests. This is not a conspiracy theory, this is well documented and public knowledge by those with the intention of carrying it out. EVs are just one step in the plan to reduce autonomy, despite the irony of their “autonomous” capabilities, lol. I will take the liberty of re-writing the above statement for future generations: “You will own nothing and won’t know any better.” |

I think this where Toyota is getting it right with a slower "transition" and offering more hybrids.

Why did this become an EV vs ICE debate....the i5 and 5 will look pretty much the same.

All valid points and thanks for the perspective. I am with you on being a bit more critical about this all- EV push. my 2 cents. The EVs are each automaker’s opportunity to re-invent the automobile and sell these like hot cakes again, all those GMs and Fords will get replaced and forecast for car sales will skyrocket. Every car would be eligible to “upgrade” so to speak which means massive profit for the automotive industry as a whole. Nobody actually cares about the environment at the end of the day, the analysis is not closed loop so to speak, accounting for the life cycle of an EV (birth to death and no repairs but only replacement). To the EV fans, how many teslas get assessed totaled because they are too expensive to repair, and insurance tells you to buy a new car, what happens to those totaled vehicles? And when they will be in 10,000s soon with 10-12 year lifecycle approaching soon. (Someone I know paid $26k to get Chevy bolt battery replaced) Insurance companies are also in for a great ride by raised premiums, it’s an intertwined ecosystem which will help profits for many many industries. Landfill with ewaste, no wonder Elon wants to go to Mars as this planet would be full of battery waste. More R&D in Hybrids (why did they not pick up with BMW and others, not profitable?) and Fuel cell vehicles please. EVs are great, but an all-EV world is non sustainable. There are two sides of the coin, it’s high team we see both and make our assessment, popular media is there to brainwash us and incentivized by the same lobbying army.

I agree, I think a full EV just isn't practical use of resources. When a vast majority of people drive <100 miles per day, IMO i think 50 miles is the sweet spot for a hybrid. The amount of battery of a 300 mile range is = to 6 hybrids.
If you want to do a roadtrip, gas is still just way more convenient

yea we definitely skipped a step. the push should be more hybrids. then into EV, if anything...
we would still be majority ICE if it wasnt for Tesla |

I guess I am puzzled by the short lived Activehybrid 3 and 5 drivetrains, back from F10 and F30 era. Hondas and Toyotas continuing to sell their hybrids (not plug-in) drivetrains with huge dealer markups. Same with the Lexus line of NX and RX hybrids that are plenty to choose from and don’t require a charging outlet/grid dependency to take advantage of the battery.

Tough to say about the range and how to compare them, the hybrids are listed by EPA as increased fuel efficiency by an mpg rating for gasoline/diesel, the old days of when Prius touted 50mpg. The PHEVs being marked as battery only range with mpge. It’s beyond my knowledge base to know how to calculate, perhaps someone here knows the details! Agree, today’s commute style use with PHEV range is great, I am assuming this architecture of pairing the battery with ICE is also more efficient. On the other hand it’s nice to not have to drive on a depleted battery for long drives (hybrid delivering consistent power) I am of the understanding that the engineers at BMW could optimize a traditional hybrid further if the euros were invested there, perhaps there are good reasons (of efficiency and engineering that are inferior to PHEVs).

With the awd i4 starting at 62.6, I would guess the rwd i5 if there is a rwd one would probably be like 67-69 starting price?
Maybe they’ll only offer awd i5 40 with the additional torque like the added i4 today

I’d be surprised if they offer two. Best bet is probably one i5 model being AWD. But I guess we will find out soon. I expect the i5 will be in the mid $70k range on price.

I’m excited to see the car from all angles and prepared to be disappointed by some future production questions still left unanswered. Mostly, I just want to see it.
