BMW i range is phenomenal

I always get much higher than BMW & epa range states in my i3S, i4, iX, i5 and now i7 60 Xdrive.

200 miles at 50% charge today. Climate control set to AUTO 70F and doing 69 mph.

You sir, are the king of getting max range out of your BMW’s. Does that actually check out with the battery size and average economy for your i7?

BMW states range of about 321 miles for the xdrive 60 i7, but I have never gotten under 350 miles. Many times my range in my i7 is 375-400 miles.

My iX 50 range was always almost 400 miles, and my i5 M60 and i4 M50...usually almost 300 miles per charge.

I do not drive fast, but not slow either and I use climate control 100% of the time and seat cooling/heating and heated steering wheel when ever I want, and 99% of the time I drive in Comfort, aka Personal.

I just juiced my i5 (eDrive40) up to 100% for first time last night. 360 miles of range displayed! I set it to efficient mode, B mode, and A/C to 69 on auto. I’lll keep it that way until I get down to 10% and then see how many actual commuter miles I end up with.

My i5 m60 is showing about 278 miles on a full charge with 20“ wheels. Given I was expecting 256 I will take it!

Awesome range. BMW is just so good with battery management and energy recuperation!

I had TWO Jaguar I-Pace and even if you drove down hills for miles and the battery showed active energy recuperation/charging the whole time...the miles range and battery % would NEVER increase. I mean never!!!!

I will be charging to 100% tomorrow for the first time as I am going on a BMW Car Club ride. It should be cool (mid 50’s) and rainy with possible thunderstorms. I’m not expecting to see anything above 250, although the ride will be backroads with a lot of turns and no freeway speeds. We will see.

Really interesting video posted by Carwow on YouTube where they drive a bunch of electric sedans until they die.

I won’t spoil it 🙂

They should have had the i5 with the 19” wheels and without the M-Sport package to get maximum range. I don’t know the WLTP range with 19 vs 20, but it would be interesting to see which number they used.

Do you think the M Sport package alone reduces the range?

I’ll bet the weather made a difference - I’m guessing it was windy before the rain hit. I’m interested in what makes the difference in efficiency between these cars - how much is aerodynamic vs intrinsic efficiency of the power transfer by the motor, power used on auxiliary systems etc. etc

I think it increases drag. It looks better, but you have to decide whether you want looks or efficiency. If I wanted efficiency, I would have bought a Lucid. It does not look sporty, but fluid. An efficiency test should test the most efficient versions of the vehicle, IMO.

They didn’t bother including the Lucid in the test. I would have like to have seen it.

I'll be anxious to see what actual mileage you get as I'm about to take my i5 eDrive40 on its first long trip of ~ 280 miles to Vegas. Plan to drive it in efficient mode, but will almost certainly need to use A/C due to extreme heat there.

That is a trip I might take sometime too (to Vegas). Hopefully you will share your experience when you get back. I'm mostly curious about where you stop along the way, if you charge on the way, where you charge when in Vegas, etc.

I have not yet taken a long trip with my eDrive40 but am keeping my fingers crossed that when I do, I don't run into charging woes. I think my next drive might be out to the BMW Performance center in Thermal CA for the new owner track day thingy. Probably some time in November or December so it's not too hot out there near Palm Springs.

EA charging in Vegas is generally bad (shocking, I know). The outlets just south of the strip are probably the best option as they have six 350 KW chargers.

I am in South FL, its hot as hell. I routinely charge my M60 to 90% I NEVER see range that high. Max I see is 215-220. If I change modes to Efficient I see 230+ if I choose Max Efficient or Max range I lose AC but can see around 300 range. My only gripe with the i5 M60 is low range for me. IDK if its the heat right now in FL but I still have range anxiety

My current thinking is to probably charge back up in Baker, CA (140 miles from home, 90 miles to Vegas) because they have 12 ultra high voltage chargers (350kW) and are rarely all is use. I would then charge up again in Baker on my return journey from Vegas to L.A. I realize that is probably being very conservative on the range, but as LVBMW points out, the charging situation in Vegas isn't great. If I get really good distance on the initial charge from home, I may consider waiting until Vegas. For example, my hotel (Mandalay Bay) has level 2 chargers, but only a few of them. Other options include the outlet mall south or Caesar's Forum shops. I'll be sure to report back after the trip.

I’m sure the A/C is the culprit.
