The off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot accused of attempting to shut down the engines on a plane midflight also allegedly attempted to open an emergency door after he was removed from the cockpit. He warned flight attendants at one point that they should handcuff him, and later said that he had taken psychedelic mushrooms, according to a federal affidavit filed Tuesday.

The Bombardier Global 6000 is used by the U.S. Air Force as a airborne communications relay platform designated the E-11A. It's called the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN). Originally developed for the rugged terrain of Afghanistan, the E-11A serves as "wi-fi in the sky" for a variety of military users. The BACN gear was also fitted to several EQ-4B Global Hawks, which were retired in 2021.

The Bombardier's excellent high-altitude capabilities make it an excellent choice for this mission, whether the area of operation is mountainous terrain or remote areas with little communications available. The Air Force has bought seven E-11As so far and plans to buy several more.

The article I linked to said he took the mushrooms 48 hours earlier and hadn't slept for 40 hours and had been depressed. It also said it was unclear if he was actively under the influence of the mushrooms during the flight.

Under the influence or not they avoided a possible tragic event.

Whatever the cause, Mr. Mushroom obviously made a career limiting mistake. By the time the FAA and judicial system get through with him, he will wish he had smoked Toadstools instead.

I fail to comprehend how dumb some people are. That knucklehead spent years to become a commercial pilot, then screws the pooch.

Oh, I'm not making excuses for him. He f***ed up and now he's going to have to pay the price. What that price is we shall see.

Hopefully at least the price of two jet engines, if the fire bottles sprayed inside them!

This discussion is probably more appropriate in The Airplane Thread, coming from someone who lost a parent in an airplane crash and doesn't find any aviation incident very LOL.....

Sorry to hear about that.

One of my friends is still angry about the loss of his best friend of his childhood years: a girl living in his neighborhood. They were very fond of each other, the way young children can be. He still recalls that she told him of going on holiday. Subsequently, he heard that she had died in a plane crash. He was devastated by the news.

An investigation concluded that the pilot had insufficient rest following a party the night before + a post-mortem blood test demonstrated alcohol intoxication (estimated 2.5 permille when he boarded the plane). The pilot was known by his peers and superiors to be an alcoholic (his license had already been revoked in the past because of his alcohol addiction but had later been reinstated). The file was classified. Declassified only decades later. At that time the bereaved found out, at last, what had truly happened. Claims for compensation filed by the bereaved were dismissed by courts of law because time-barred. The bereaved only received an apology by the powers that be.

It happened decades ago, but inside his mind my friend still has a vivid memory of his childhood girlfriend ("I can still sharply see her face in front of me right now"). He never got to terms with it. He is a very cool and level-headed guy, but when he tells about the loss, he gets really upset.

I think @Lady Jane and I are going to split the cost of buying and operating one. I wonder if she would consider going with a 99-1 split? She'll pay 99% and I'll pay 1%.

Couple of A380s at Heathrow. Sadly, only spotted 2 747s on a recent trip and they were pretty far away. I miss seeing all the elegant 747s in the various liveries

Many years ago a pilot friend suggested we partner in a twin engine Beechcraft Baron. He would run one engine and I would run the other one.

The Hawker 850 made the news this morning by taxing w/o clearance and colliding with a Citation jet landing.
