Yep, now I recall a thread addressing this. I view it as a fail but it's brand marketing and squeezing more currency out of each unit.

How do you know it's not an authentic M3?

Maybe the owner painted the carbon fiber roof and satellite antenna, removed the side gills, and replaced the exhaust, wheels and calipers to de-bling the car as to not be ostentatious.

I would be too embarrassed to see other M3 drivers on the road. No way would ever go to the dealership like this. Not sure what goes on in their heads when they bring that in for service but it isn't shame!

I bet you anything he is not embarrassed. 9 our of 10 times I have confronted an M-faker they swear it is an M and try really hard to convince me that it is a real M (special edition). I usually play stupid but drop hints that I know what I am talking about like, Oo wow I did not know the F80 came with a single tailpipe and 17s instead of quad must be a super special option

slowly they realize I may know what I am talking about and usually hurry off

Perhaps what we are witnessing is called pseudologia fantastica and mythomania. A behavior of habitual or compulsive lying. ... The individual may be lying to make their life seem more exciting when in reality they believe their life is unpleasant or boring.

To them it's worth the risk of being found out, they do not care and look away when called on it. I.E. If they just stop looking at the truth (a true Fan Boy/Girl calling them out on their Fake Badges and Such) they will disappear and the lie will maintain credibility amongst the rest of the world.

Regardless of non-car people not knowing cars, I think many know a BMW is special (read premium brand), and the liar can butter themselves up to them about the ///M being even more special.

Saw some Chinese badges on BMW around Toronto area, was told it's called "bimmer made in China." Had some research, bummer really makes cars in China for Chinese consumers, just wow.
