From my experience in the Navy, it was Motrin at 800mg; but you're correct, it was the absolute "cure" for everything.

Well actually neither comes in 800 mg as advil and motrin are brand names of over the counter ibuprofen only available in 200mg strength in the us. If you had 800mg ibuprofen it was rx strength or 4 tablets of the above.

It was 800mg ibuprofen, they corpsman always called it Motrin or Advil, but I'm sure it was off brand that the US Government bought in quantities measured by cargo ship size. You were typically directed to take 2 or 3 of them and then 'suck it up'.

I believe I was given super fancy 'Tylenol 3 w/ Codine' when they yanked my wisdom teeth out via a pair of pliers on-board the USS Indianapolis whilst in the Persian Gulf. Super fun.

800mg Motrin was prescribed so heavily in the Army that we called it Vitamin M...

Generally it was 800mg 3 or 4 times a day for anything pain-related short of uncontrolled bleeding or amputation...
