I think that's why they used to have a heavy waxy, greasy protective coating the cars would be sprayed with and the dealers had to wash off using a special soap. Do they still do that?

Gotcha. Those were supposed to get top priority for parts but that seems to have changed as dealers are receiving the parts for the stop sale vehicles. Hopefully it is just in transit and you get it soon. Do they have your vehicle or are you still driving it?

They are telling me that BMW does not have a part for the i5. I saw the communication between the dealership and bmw, and it said no ETA. I don’t believe it but it’s someone I’ve been to for years so I don’t think he would be making that up. I had the choice of getting a rental for an infinite amount of time or taking my car. I took my car back. I’m just trying to be real careful for now. I don’t let anyone else drive the car. It’s becoming a major pain.

I have an appointment for next Tuesday to have this recall dealt with on my car (among other things). Service rep said it would take the whole day and he's arranged a loaner for me for the day. I'll provide another update afterwards regarding whether they actually dealt with the recall or not during the visit.

I would be very interested in the outcome. In fact, I would be curious if you would’ve called to see whether they even have the part to fix it? I presume you have an i5?

Yes, I have an i5. I originally scheduled an appointment over 3 weeks ago to get my sun visor replaced, but they had to order the part. Now that they have the part, I asked the service rep if he could also take care of the recalls at the same time (the IB, and the Wheel grounding recall). I assumed they will take care of both because he told me it will take the whole day, and I know it won't take a whole day to replace a sun visor and do the 1-hour wheel grounding recall. However, I texted him and asked if both recalls would be taken care of, including the IB one. He said yes, but would double check with his technician. I have yet to hear back about confirmation. I may never know until that day - I suspect it will depend on what the official resolution is, and whether or not they need/have any parts that may be required.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my understanding that not every vehicle inspected was going to need a part. From the early thread documents there was an inspection procedure that needed to be performed and a bench test. If the part passed the test, then it was simply reinstalled. If it didn't then it would be replaced.

I'm not sure what their latest figures are for discovering problems when inspected but in July it was <1%.

Has this strategy changed?

No, that was never part of the process. Vehicles included in the recall are done by VIN and supplier/production records.

The inspection in the SIB was for the new part since they were using old stock as part of the remedy.

Good luck, I would say a very, very, very small chance that there will be a part available for you.

Appreciate the inside intel here….parsing the specific words employed in these notices for ordinary customers feels almost impossible. As someone who works in a very different highly technical/regulated field, I appreciate the terms and words carry very specific and precise meanings and those of us who are less familiar with the language used here are likely trying to interpolate the gaps in information that we perceive while coming up with almost correct, but ultimately not quite correct interpretations.

One thing that I wanted to ask directly - Todd is referencing some earlier posts and threads that hinted at the possibility that despite the very broad recall/stop sale, the number of actually defective components which would lead to braking problems is likely very small.

It may also be true that there’s simply no way of knowing whether a part will become defective or not without just replacing it in a preventative manner. It’s obvious that this is a corporate nightmare - BMW needs to own this and get in front of it with customers, but also try to manage expectations amongst owners as to whether we should all be wondering whether our brakes are going to suddenly loose power assist somewhat randomly. It’s a really difficult needle to thread from a communications perspective, even if the situation is clearly and completely understood by HQ.

My question is whether this interpretation is close to correct - it’s likely a very rare issue, but we’ll likely see most vehicles recalled for a replacement of the unit in question anyway.

You are correct, it is an issue that is estimated to occur in about 1% of the vehicles that are included in the recall. In other words, in the US any vehicle that is included in the recall based on supplier and production records will have the IBS replaced even though it doesn't have the issue.

Spectulation below:

So, who pays for this in the corporate world? I saw the notice of revised profits from BMW that stated this is likely going to cost them close to a billion dollars. Since the part is made by Continental AG, and it was a failure on their part to perform clean room techniques, are they financially responsible as well? Or is BMW going to have to sue them to be made whole over this?

It has been reported that Continental will have some responsibility for the replacement costs. I would assume that is by contract since it would have been too soon to have been litigation.

I just spoke to my dealer yesterday and he said there were no updates on when they would start receiving the parts for the brake recall. My car was supposed to be delivered on August 10th. So the dealers have started receiving the parts for stop-sale vehicles, is this definite? Incidentally, when I mentioned to my dealer if the situation wasn't solved soon I may have to bolt and switch to an Audi or Mercedes he said we'll give you back one lease payment if you remain loyal to BMW.

Yes, some dealers are reporting that they received them and others are expecting them within days. You have to keep in mind though that dealers are often not telling it like it is so who knows for sure. The software is still scheduled to be released on the 19th so we should see the remedy soon. Canada has received their instructions but it involves rolling back the odometer which likely will not be legal in the US so we will have to see how they handle it.

Keep in mind though that dealers are not getting enough parts to remedy all of the vehicles on stop sale. They initially only getting enough to take care of 10% or so of their vehicles. This likely will take a month or more until all vehicles are remedied.

Some dealers are going in order of when a vehicle arrived on their lot but initially BMWNA mentioned clearing the GLK (7 and 8 series and X7) first but that may have changed.

I test-drove an 8 series the other day (wonderful too expensive car). They asked me to check it out because the 2024 isn't on stop-sale.

So is this part the same in each model (so, is the x3 part the same as the i7 part)? Or do they have to come up with new parts In every different model?

There are five different part numbers but some are used in more than one model.

As an aside, the X3 is not included in this recall.

Is the part number different between an i5 and say a 540?
