I swear I had to do something like this when I moved to Italy.

Shipped a US spec car to the port of Genoa and went to go pick it up. Turns out the ship crew pilfered anything not permanently affixed to the car, to include both front and rear plates. I also lost a pair of nice jumper cables and a few CDs.

The shipping company guy assisting me just took two manila folders and asked me what the plate number was (a US number, mind you), and he proceeded to write it in large letters with a sharpie and taped them to the license plate frames.

I was thinking there's no way this was going to work.

So we're in a secure area of the port, and we still had to check out of there through an Italian customs checkpoint. We drive up and there's an armed customs agent at the gate... the guy helping me gets out and talks to him, showing the customs paperwork. They talk for a bit and he points at me in the car... the agent gives the car quick once over, checks both "plates", looks at me... then he shrugged and waved me through.

I had to drive five hours back to my house with those tags on!
