Ugh, gotcha. I remember someone saying to not use them until the update, but I guess that's not going to help then. So are all 15's going to be vulnerable to BMW's chargers?..

BMW/Apple are still investigating the issue, no public announcement from either yet, so no confirmation on effected models.
However, given that it only happens with the 15 series, it’s more likely something specific with that hardware. I reckon the placement of the NFC chips has moved internally ( I haven’t had time to compare the ifixit tear downs ), and they are now in a less optimal place for how the charging Matt works. The difficulty fixing lies in the charging pad - it isn’t an ECU that is programmable , so unlikely BMW can fix by altering the Amperage output, without changing the physical part ( interestingly, a new revision is going into November onwards builds, but might be for a different reason ). And it’s probably difficult for apple to fix as a t also can’t control the amperage and therefore heat. I imagine all they will be able to do is disable the wireless charging via an update, if it can detect what charger it is. I don’t believe the BMW wireless charging Matt is QI certified , otherwise it would be an easier fix |

Nope, that’s why I just keep a charger in the armrest. Has a higher output then the wireless so charges faster, and it’s not like I need access to my phone when driving anyway ….

My car didn't have one, I recently got one that was recommended to me from Ali, but I have concerns about it — as my phone is very warm while on the charger.

As far as I am aware this is still an outstanding issue. Neither Apple nor BMW have released any sort of update to rectify this. I was about to click Buy on the 15 Pro, but am now waiting to see what happens. Don’t want a new phone to fry the moment I put it in my Z4!

Well again. I’ll ask the question.
Has anyone with a 2021 x5 45e burned out a iPhone 15 pro max or had issues? Also are there any particular years or models worse then others? |

I don’t have an X5, but based on what we know I’d have thought there was a very good chance the X5’s wireless charger would fry the 15 Pro’s NFC chip. Virtually all BMW models are mentioned across various threads online, as they all share the same wireless charger. This includes reports of the latest Supra encountering the same issue, which of course also uses a BMW wireless charger.

It's not a BMW problem. It's clearly an Apple problem.

My iPhone became so hot it shut down and cracked the screen. Everything else seems to work fine but I now use a charge cord in the center console.

It's most likely the fault of both companies. I've designed Qi charging circuitry before at work. I suspect the BMW charger is really inefficient and poor AND the iPhone has a protection issue. Apple probably didn't see it in testing because I have come across few wireless chargers as shit as the BMW implementation.
