Agreed, I rarely see Amazon as the actual seller. I do have a Hamilton from Jomashop, but would probably abstain from buying a higher end watch from them. They are authentic watches with serial numbers, but they do have a screwy warranty.

New BMW User does bring up a good point about maintenance, mechanical watches are not maintenance free and require service every five years or so which usually runs around $500 and involves cleaning and oiling the movement, checking and resetting the calibration and resealing the case with new seals. Some watches like Rolex have small parts that are meant to be replaced at service like the winder tube, which adds cost to the service, especially on gold or platinum models.

I bought a Baume & Mercier Classima 8692 from Amazon (and Amazon was the seller, as I made sure of this before purchase) 9 months ago or so and when you look at that watch now, Watchsavings is the only seller. Interesting.

True to Amazon, the sale was flawless and I received it in two days. I guess if there's an issue they'll really be put to the test

they may/may not be real, but another problem is how long they've been sitting idle, and the first thing you may need to do upon recieving it is a service (which cost as much as car servicing btw ).. also most online grey markets dont offer manufacturer warranty, instead they provide their own shoddy version)

grey market is not worth the hassle, their prices seem great, but after a bit of haggling in a brick and mortar store, you wont be paying too much more. if you can claim tax (via work or travel) you might even be able to beat it.

best of luck

I agree. You need to take the time to see what options best suit you.

A watch from an authorized dealer will likely only cost 3-500$ more then the lowest price you will see online. Which is nothing considering that could mean next to nothing on some expensive watches. People with grey market will get turned away on the spot with some brands if they go in for service. The real dealers are threaded with losing the brand if the service grey market watches in some cases, so, it is worthwhile to pay a few extra $

Also, creat a good relationship with a dealer and they will bend over backwards to help you because they want repeat business.

My "watch guy" deals with both myself and my dad, and he is great to work with. He actually ended up picking up the Nomos line because of me. He is now 1 of 4 retailers in the US carrying the brand. So take the time to create the relationships, they pay off for both parties in the end.

That is if you plan on having multiple watches

Yea, I posted I'm not considering Omega, TAG, Movado overall. They are fine watches in of themselves, but want something a bit more exclusive like a Panerai, Hublot, Rolex, etc.

Exception: one TAG I do really like is the TAG Monaco.
Tag aquaracer is my fav, it looks like a rolex

I love Breitling and Cartier watches, but I'd imagine those are upwards of $5k.

I personally also love Nixon watches, super casual and functional. Their whole line is also < $1000 I believe.

Yes, low end Cartier are in around the 5k mark, and rarely worth it till you get to the 7k tange depending on what your requirements are.

Nixon has some very nice watches ranging from about 150 all the way to about 2500. Depends what you're looking for. But if you're looking at nixons in the 1000+ range, I might recommend looking more towards Hamilton at that point.

Again, depends what you're looking for.

I have a 1000$ Nixon and a 1500$ Hamilton, there's definitely a different market for each and build type.

Nixon battery operated watches stop at about 1500, then they (use to) switch to automatic winding, using the same internals as Hamilton and others. But lesser build quality and similar pricing.

Again, just my opinion.

I've come to two watches I will eventually buy. A Panerai Power Reserve and a IWC Portuguese Chronograph. Between the two, I'll have a dress up-up watch, dress up watch, dress down watch.

Which PAM do you have presently? Are you looking at a Luminor or Radiomir GMT? I'm not a YM fan, but certainly wouldn't try to talk you out of one.

I have a 0164 luminor. I would be trading to a luminor GMT. I like the yacht foe the classic design and the Rolex hardly takes a hit. I like the panerai for more functionality.
