WOW! I admire your job. What's more fun? Driving the 335i or piloting the A320?

Professional Liquor and Beer tester for Canadian governmnent!
I taste all incoming alcohol beverages to make sure they are up to par with Canadian standards. You have heard of UL and CSA while I work for CLA (Canadian Liquor tasting association of Canada). |

Thanks OP, I not only have always wondered the same question, but decided to become a registered member just to respond to your thread!
Someone earlier mentioned the notion that inquiries in regard to one's occupation only leads to social status association. I don't believe it was the original intent of OP, and like OP, I too am interested in networking with people who share a similar taste in car. However, we can't deny the existence of social status association in the car a person drives, because the theories in consumer behaviors tell us that the identity projection through one's purchases is very real. People often choose one brand over another brand because 1. they feel the said brand is more aligned with their values (e.g. refuse to shop at Wal-Mart), or 2. they want to be perceived as consumers who share values the said brand represents (e.g. Apple fanboys). For example, Scion has successfully penetrated the youth market through its individualistic/personal flavor-centric ads, and sponsorship of street sporting events where young people congregate. Scion in this capacity has developed a marketing perception among the youngsters that Scion is their brand. Another example, Bud Lite is a cheap beer usually drunk by price-conscious market segment (blue collar workers). But their TV ads usually cast people in suits drinking Bud Lite. This is an example to develop a perception within its targeted segment--the blue collar workers--that they think by drinking Bud Lite, they could be like white collar workers (in suits). This linkage between a consumer's projection of who he or she is and who he or she wants to be with the product he or she buys become stronger as the product moves from commodity (gas, detergent) to more expensive goods (cars, shoes). After all, people don't find what kind of cooking oil or toilet paper define them, but people do find what kind of clothes they wear or what kind of cars they drive reflect their images. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirational_brand With that being said, I have always wondered what exactly is the identity and value that BMW market segment represents, and by choosing BMW, what group of consumers will I be a part of? More specifically, I want to know, among many other things, who would opt for a 335i over a 328i? People who spend and budget wisely? Or mostly live-at-home 20-something who have negative equity? From the brief survey of this thread, I have gotten the impression that most owners here are very young. While being young doesn't preclude one from a high salary, I doubt many people are making six figure here. And even with a six figure salary, trust me, $50k is still a big chunk of money to finance. I guess all I am saying is, I want to know from whom am I receiving advices before basing my purchasing decision on them. By the way, I work in a business/technology hybrid capacity at a major silicon valley technology firm. I am currently considering either a 328i or a 335i coupe. |

Hmm, I'm sort of jack of a few different trades. After 5 years as a trader on Wall Street, I now work for my father's company as an insurance broker. But still trade stocks in my personal accounts, do alittle financial planning and sort of a real estate investor. Have a few different properties that I own. My primary residence here on Long Island and an investment property that I rent out in Palm Beach, FL.

@Anonymousbear: Regarding "who to take advice from"....simple, take advice from yourself. Test both cars, see which you like better.
What I like about my 335 will most likely be different than what you like. I've always been a "function over form" kind of guy, and the performance was what won me over. Driving feel, strong acceleration, great handling; this car has it all. That's me.
