Simple as that.
+1, and very true. I am lucky to have been in such a position for some time now. But as I grow older and get closer to retiring from an enjoyable and rewarding career, not having to ever look at the price tag is less a mark of being rich. Far more, I measure wealth in long, close friendships, good health, close family ties and the ability to make some sense out of an increasingly bizarre and irrational world.

In Dallas, there's a phenomenon known as the "$30,000" millionaire. Don't know how it's possible. I've never earned that little in my entire life...even when I sold cars in college.

wth you guys always made more than 30k? Like I said, I always had a good title, but I decided to buck up and ask for the money to go along with it, so I got a raise to 35k on 4/1/16.

Being honest, yes, personally. Least I made was in college selling cars, and that was around $40-45k working "part time" (40 hours/week). Most car sales are 50-60hrs a week.

But keep in mind I spent most of my life in the NY Metro area.

Due to my past and present employment I've been surrounded by lots of very rich guys. I've actually had this conversation with multiple people that are indisputably "Rich" with some hilariously out of touch responses. A couple of comments that stand out regarding this subject:

Midwest Billionaire says this to me: "you know when I really felt it was about $400 million. That was when I stopped thinking about the cost of calling my pilot and telling him to fly me to NYC for a weekend"

SoCal Billionaire: "The first $35 million is by far the hardest to make, after that making money gets much easier which to me made me feel rich"

My father (as you'll see NOT the same category as above): He brought home a new 1992 Mitsubishi Montero which was like the coolest thing I'd ever sat in at that point in my life and said: "That is the first car I've ever paid all cash for, and I now have a new car and absolutely no debt in my life and I never plan on borrowing another penny again" and for him that was the first time he felt "rich". I was 10 and will never forget that.

My point is its all relative. For me it'll be the day that I know I could lose my job and have enough money to maintain my lifestyle at that point whether I worked another day or not. And as far as accomplishing that goal goes my father's lesson of removing debt from the equation goes a long long way.

By the way I work in finance and understand very well the principal of leverage and how to use it to your advantage and how technically leverage used correctly is a good thing and yada yada yada.... There is something about being debt free that is tough to put a price on but to me its worth whatever advantage I can gain with leverage. For the record I bought a new home about 2 years ago that has me back in the land of debt (albeit moderate). I look forward to paying my cheap money low interest rate mortgage off as soon as possible

Maybe everyone is talking about first year out of school?

Yeah, or they weren't spoon fed and had to work a minimum wage job if they wanted to save for a car.

Yup, that was what I was referring to. Anything prior is not meaningful

I mean, when I was 17 I made like $10/Hr at UPS as a temp. I didn't count that...

When I was 12-14 I mowed lawns... For $25/lawn. Didn't count that either.

So, I edit, I never made <$30k/yr total comp after school.

Sorry, don't mean to offend anyone.

Just bringing up the fact that you drive a relatively new and nice BMW for $12/hour before tax.

I was spoon fed until college. Actually, I had a bet with my dad to get straight As while a junior in HS....prize was his friends 1980 Porsche 911 SC...white, with the cookie cutter wheels and whale tail. Had a roll bar. I lost the bet and got the family Camaro which I crashed then got a new Integra

Then, after getting Academic suspension at Amherst in Freshman year...I was completely cutoff. Had to pay my own way and finish up at the local state school..

I don't know you IRL, but I gather you have done well enough for yourself. Well-done. Many people, in the above circumstance, would have folded. Good on you for not doing that.

Edit: Also, you had me at Camaro.

Thanks man.

Haha, still want me an F body again someday!

Edit: I did well for myself until 2012, then joined the startup ranks. Today, clawing my way back in corporate.
