Feels like they didn’t talk much about comfort either.

They were among my favorite reviewers :-/

Has anyone seen any written US reviews that compare the two BMW i5 models and have actual range experiences?

I did read an Edmunds review of the M60 versionand it outperformed the ranges estimates, but not sure what type of driving they did. Have seen nothing on the 40 yet.

This is a good piece on range - it’s only for the M60, but it highlights the massive variability that exists in these numbers depending upon speed (and also temperature if you try the interactive tool). My “real world” experience in NorCal in winter (temps from 30’s to 50’s) has been 260-270miles from the M60 with mostly highway driving.

I’m getting 2.8 miles per kWh in the area north of Seattle with temps in the upper 30’s to low 40’s. This next weekend will just be a lot of snow and temps in the teens. I probably won’t be driving.

A Google search came up with these links. The first guy lives in the Chicago area, so that is sort of a US review, albeit a little old now.

https://www.bmwblog.com/2023/04/25/b...rive40-review/

https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2...-drive-review/

https://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews...5-first-drive/

I hope these help. Have fun reading.

What I find odd is I've driven i7 and iX way harder, for way longer, with no thermal derating issues.

I spoke to the head of powertrain about it and he seemed just as confused when I showed him the video. He said they've pounded them around the alps and on the street never ran into issues. Last I heard was that they were going to pull the data off of my test car and then email me with the results.

I haven't heard back from them even after prodding. Oh well - I will test it when I can in the US on some canyon roads. I hope it was just a one off weird situation with this particular car because I really wasn't on it that hard at all

Also, I own a Model S Plaid and a Model 3 Performance, both of which have Track Mode that pre-chill the drive systems and run cooling way harder than normal. I hope the real ///M cars have something similar

Kyle
Very interested to hear if there was ever any update on this, Kyle and also if you are going to be able to put an i5 on a 70mph range test sometime?

Big kudos to you and your channel - as a relatively recent EV owner, your channel is by far the most informative and informed on EV tech. Somehow you’re always operating at 100% SOC yourself ;-)

Great job with your reviews, I find them very detailed, informative, well structured and honest! Which car would you recommend the 2024 BMW i5 edrive 40 with driver assistance professional and Premium packages w 20 inch non run flat all season tires or the 2023 Lucid Air Pure AWD base model w 19 inch all season tires. I live on Long Island and wondering if the 20 inch tires will hold up to the potholes.

From a quality perspective would u say Lucid is behind BMW?
Range and Driving experience would you say Lucid?

Reliability? BMW?

I currently have a 2021 BMW 540 in drive.

Lucid is about $7341 more than the BMW but Lucid is AWD vs RWD. Is RWD risky in snow and ice?

Thanks Again for all your reviews! Love your channel.

There are several i5 owners in the northeast on this forum who could probably weigh in if you started a thread to address experiences driving in winter. Lucid definitely has more range (if you check out his Lucid Air range test).

I don’t think Kyle’s a regular poster here unfortunately!

ArenaEV just posted a good write up on their test of the i5 M60 that builds on and incorporates their very informative range test and range model.

That review is very good, it points out the good and the bad. I prefer this type of review that is not biased in any way.

Seems like a deliberate effort to alienate existing customers. Too much gimmicky tech too fast.

I’m 48 and drive an F10. It only has 3 modes, which is 2 too many, and zero sound effects.

In fact, I’d say the thing I like least about the car are the modes. Stupid throttle pedal mapping and ridiculous angry red gauge cluster in “sport” mode. It’s tacky, and it’s nowhere near as bad as this new i5. The last thing I want to do in a daily driver is have to fiddle and fuss all the time.

There should be one mode:
BMW Sport Sedan Mode

You do know you can just configure your favorite mode, leave it at that and never change it do you?

Don't get me wrong, I also think cars are getting a bit techy for my tastes, but if I was a manufacturer I would also want to make sure to cover all my bases and make sure every piece of tech is available for the customer segment that wants it. They are in the business of selling as many cars as they can make.

Only thing we should ask is for that tech to be as unobstrusive as possible and easy to disable if not needed. Modes are like that; you can choose one and be settled for the life of the car.

If that's the case I'll back off a bit on my criticism of the new car. It just seems the reviewers are emphasizing the need to fiddle with all these things, especially the speed limit warnings which reset every time you get in. Maybe I'm not understanding their intentions properly? If the myriad settings are all set-and-forget, and they all change based on which keyfob is used (like the memory seats do), then it makes more sense.

My F10 always switches back to Comfort mode regardless of how it was set when you power down, unless you code the car to do something different (I coded it to always have engine start/stop disabled for example). To me that's even dumber than having the car change the radio station from where you left it.

I believe the UK car doesn’t allow you to make the speed limit monitor permanent. It’s the first thing I turned off in my car and it remained off.

Yes - I think it’s a government regulation, not a BMW thing
