Yes I just slice the onion to a decent thickness so it is not to flimsy and stamp out the shape. Just don't put much pressure on it as the layers make come apart. I can usually get 2 shapes out per slice and just cut the rest up and put it on the bottom for presentation sake. If you only cut one shape out in the middle you can use the negative slice for decoration, it looks great as well.
If you want another easy presentation trick for asian food you can get some Onigiri molds. They are use to make Onigiri, which is rice shaped into balls or triangles and sometimes things stuffed in side and again maybe furikake on top. http://www.amazon.com/Rice-Mold-Set-.../dp/B002TZ04HS Here is a pic with some of that.

AH yea I do not care for star fruit much. You might want to pick up a cheap mandolin vegetable slicer too. Another easy way to dress up some of your food.
