And the fact that the Caymans were (probably, or more likely definitely) capable of taking those curves faster than my 335i is also moot. The fact that a car is capable of going 90 MPH on a twisty mountain road does not mean it is a good idea to do so There is a post elseshere in this forum that shows what can happen when something goes wrong in this type of environment. It does not matter whether it was the divers fault or if it was unaviodable. The results can be catastrophic, and in this case a member of our community came way too close to a family tragedy.
I'm a member of the Cayman Club, and yes that was a tragedy narrowly averted. In that case it was a Deer...but I've personally dialed my street risk level way back since starting with track days, graduating to semi-pro road racing, and now back to the occasional track day. You are right, both cars offer far greater capability than what should be used on the street. However, when taking a fun backroad at 80%, it's nice to have that 20% in reserve.

I've just traded in my Cayman S for an e93 335i. The e93 will replace both my e90 335i and my Cayman S. Track days are being replaced by golf. i guess I'm getting old, kind of like stick shifts.

+1, but the new RS6 isn't a fair comparison vs the older M5. it's like comparing the dated RS4 with the new M3.

As a new owner of an M3 DCT I can say for a fact that 6MT is more fun. DCT is faster and provides more consistent performance than any manual driver can muster tho. I don't wanna feed any flames. That's just my 2¢.

Audi is boring. Lame engine choices... (The 4.2L V8 is like 10 years old.) Cars that appeal only to chicks... (Is the TT a hot hatch, a sports car, or neither?) Plus all Porsche/Audi/VAG DSG boxes shift in the wrong direction... (And MT is only available in engine/trim configurations I would never choose.)

If you wanna shift (or not at all) the wrong way in an obsolete vehicle that has only had its headlights updated in the last ten years, you might want an Audi.

funny b/c the audi dealer by me told me about a year ago that they had nothing to compete with the 335 in that price range..even on a track the 335 has beaten the rs4 a number of times.. and that is m3 competition..audi always has handling issues.. they are more oriented for high speed cruising than on the track. just look at the front weight they purposely keep it high so the car is more stable at high speeds.. just like merc does.. but that kills handling and steering feel..which is why you have to have quatro which i hate awd...such a waste of gas, the front always plows through turns..awd sucks ass.. only if i got a 911 turbo i would make the sacrifice.

ok now i know there was some bashing but really i do like audi.. i think there styling is great there interior is great but there powertrains and chassis need some work.. they need to learn how to build a drivers car.. a 400hp rs4 that costs some 80k shouldn't get beat by 40k 335 on any track.. that would be like the audi 3.2 beating an m3 on a track..think about that..audi still has a ways in my book..but that is for a drivers car.. as it stands now they have a great overall package just not a true driver oriented car.

I'm not claiming he wasn't being an ass, but I'd like to add some perspective...

Perhaps his comment about "beating BMW" was specifically in reference to their DSG transmission. In that respect Audi/VW is leaps and bounds ahead, and BMW is playing catch-up with their DCT. (Which btw is now being offered on the 3 series only in Australia. Go figure.)

I would trade my e90 steptronic in a heartbeat for an e90 with DCT. Audi's DSG has been the benchmark for some time now and Mitsubishi's highly acclaimed TC-SST transmission is even a step above.

The Dual clutch transmission is the wave of the future and you will see these replacing both manual and traditional automatic gear boxes in the future. They are THAT good. If you've never driven one I highly recommend going to your local VW or Audi dealer and test driving one. The transmissions offer all the performance of a manual transmission and then some, with shifts and rev matching in milliseconds and no power loss due to fluid coupling of steptronic, while also offering fuel economy advantages, as well as convenience in stop and go traffic. It really is the best of all worlds.

Now don't get me wrong. Audi's cars have nothing on BMW overall. But BMW is behind with their transmission development.

I like the interior so much more in my A4. It looks more modern to me. Kinda sad especially since the B6 and B7 Audis pretty much share the same interior. In other words, the interior design has been around since 02' and it still looks better to me.

Regardless, Im trying to fight the urge to get a 335. Nice car
OK, here's my $.02....

I test drove the new Audi A4 a few weeks ago, wanting to see what the competition was offering before we made the final decision on my wife's 2009 E90....well, regardless of whether they offer a 6MT or not, handling is not that of a BMW. Test drove the 3.2 V6 and was not impressed. Interior lighting (we drove it at night) reminded me of my Jetta (no disrespect to the Jetta intended).

Best of luck to everyone with whatever floats their boat.

It's very hard to find a salesman who actualy know's about the car they are selling. They usually make bunch of crap(In your case, the false reviews of A4's beating a 3 series) just to sell a car. In my opinion, a salesman will lose respect in front of me and thus lose potential customers.

I know a few salesmen who say the truth by stating only the better points and they are the people I always recommend to my friends.

I sell BMW and used to sell audis. I have friends across the street and who still sell audis. Look at how many less cars they sell compared to us and how much less money they make. Enough said. What a joke and he gives salespeople like myself a bad name. I hope he gets kicked in the balls and punched in the face on the way down.
