The base law hasn't changed, it's just not a correctable violation anymore. The panic is completely overblown in this thread. State referee tests for 95 DB @ 4500 RPM. I know this because I did it not too long ago. Why did I get the ticket? Because I was an asshole to the cop, so he made it tough on me. Also, if you pass the referee test the ticket for loud exhaust gets thrown out.
Also when you get tested they also test for emissions. Based on the amount of catless downpipes I would be far more worried about that. |

AB 1824 -- Fine for loud vehicle exhausts
Drivers in a vehicle or motorcycle with an excessively loud exhaust will be fined. Previously, they would have been cited with a “fix-it” ticket. |

What's the point of the change.org petition? How will getting out of state people to sign it help?

Hopefully this reduces the urge of people to decat and straight pipe their car at the same time. It's not a good sound. Some people think louder is better when that's just plain dumb

I'm sure you are fine. Also, you can always run the test in efficient mode which should keep 2 of those valves closed. The car that I tested had an aftermarket exhaust and ran a 82 DB, which honestly I felt was way too quiet. But I took my certificate and ran.

My understanding of the law -- the old way was a fix-it ticket for a loud exhaust, and the new way is just a regular non-correctable ticket IE Police cannot write it off. it becomes a state ref fix, along with 1k fine. not sure if it gets state ref fix you dont pay the 1k fine.
So i would assume if your exhaust is Carb / Cali compliant and under 95dbs you are good. Reminds me of when the Dodge SRT4s came out back in the 00's folks were getting pulled over for the stock exhaust. still sucks though. |

Do people even know how loud 95db is? DB scale is logarithmic but for comparison, 90 dB according to something I quickly found on Google from Purdue University is a jackhammer, for 100 dB they're using aircraft and helicopters to describe the sound. 80db is where damage starts to happen with prolonged exposure
The majority of everyone's modified exhausts on here are not close to that 95db limit |
