I think you severely underestimate Taiwan's ability to survive without the PRC.
China depends on Taiwan for foreign investment and any move to confiscate Taiwanese assets on the mainland would be devastating China economy as other foreign investment would flee. Taiwan can well afford to purchase food and raw materials from sources other than the PRC and you neglect to mention the effect a loss of the Taiwan market would have on the rural farmers of China. There is only one nation in the region from which Taiwan needs to fear invasion and that is the PRC.

someone mentioned throwing japanese into camps. yes, it happened, but that was 60 years ago. since then, we have given japanese americans all their constitutional rights back as well as paying compensation. that's why you don't see japanese americans protesting against being oppressed.
The tibet invasion also occured 60 years ago. The killing in tibet is still occuring today and the tibetans are still being oppressed. i don't think its quite fair to compare the two situations. Also, China does not protect Taiwan. The US protects Taiwan FROM China. You don't protect a country by firing missiles overhead during an election to try to sway the vote. |
