If you ban all out going flights from infected countries, that will work. Basically you are applying quarantine to the whole country.

Infected countries have to ban all commercial flights from flying passengers out. Of course, they will not do that because it does nothing to help their citizens. It will also scare away people from flying in to help.

Does not work in reality but works in theory.

Like the old days when they quarantine people with leprosy or syphilis. Isolation to prevent spread.

And you think everyone who wants to come to the US has the means to do this?

It is not a single solution, but it would certainly slow down inflow to the US.

I'm not sure why so many people get hung up on absolutes. There is rarely a single solution. Rather multiple solutions will work in conjunction to solve the problem.

I'm genuinely curious as to how many inbound flights the US has on a daily basis from hot countries....I would imagine the number to be low, but I'm honestly not sure.

But i'm not so keen on believing the CDC when they claim 0% chance of this disease spreading.

I realize and have pointed out why it spreads so quickly in other regains, i also realize that the morality rate of ebola in 1st world countries is less than 1%. But i'm all for taking excessive steps that will help keep this thing out of the country.

I believe Europe has halted flights and passengers from hot countries. And therefore they have no cases.

Huh....I can't find any news on that. BBC UK, WSJ, CNN, Fox....no headlines/news about it.


And Europe does have cases....they've brought people back like we have. They don't have a similar case to the man in Dallas, though.

And the flight bans are coming from the airlines, not the gov't. BA has stopped flights from west Africa.

I was also reading an article in reference to essentially closing the "hot" countries. Doing so would not only block in non-country citizens (US Troops, for instance) but would most likely cause ebola to spread in those countries, at which point, would make everything worse for us, as well.

We didn't have troops in Liberia (thanks, Obama!), and anyone we had could go through quarantine procedures before returning to the US (think Ellis Island). And not sure how it would make things worse for us if Ebola spreads in isolated countries? On the contrary, it might allow us to be more focused in our support/relief efforts for those countries if we don't have to be distracted with addressing the problem on our shores.

We have US personnel in some of the hot countries.

In any event, it's near impossible to seal off a country/countries...not to mention the impossibility of completely isolating ourselves. The more wicked strains of the flu, for instance, are far more contagious and have killed far more people than ebola....but we didn't seal our borders for that. Furthermore, harking back to a time in the distant past where we closed ourselves off doesn't mean it will apply now....much, much different era, in my opinion.

Well, that would seem a far better option than the current thinking of the CDC Director - that "we can fight it better in those countries" - something that has never been tried, and never achieved. On the other hand, Yugoslavia was quarantined in 1972 due to an outbreak of smallpox, which was effectively contained. Not sure why we can't do the same with the Hot Zone?

The CDC is not only trying to contain the spread, but contain public panic. Comments such as 0% chance of a domestic case are short sighted, yes, but also about panic control.

As far as Yugo....their own government sealed their country off. Some of these western African nations barely have a government, much less one capable of sealing their country.

I think you miss the point - if there are no flights in/out of the country, and their African neighbors certainly (at some point) won't allow them in, then it is contained. I doubt they can swim this far.

I'm also astonished at the CDC's utter lack of communication on this issue. For example, Hazmat teams are only just today cleaning the apartment of the Ebola patient - when the media asked the CDC previously about their plan to clean the apartment, they didn't have one. The hazardous waste is also still sitting at the site, because the CDC needs a special permit from the DOT to transport the materials for destruction. Did no one think through these scenarios at the CDC, Homeland Security, etc.?

It is the government. You don't expect them to be smart, do you? Bureaucracy at its finest.
