Back in my IT manager days, I bought a 768GB server for use as a data storage server. It doesn't seem that far in the past, although it was probably 12-15 years ago. But I remember thinking at the time that we'd never use that much data space and that it was 3/4 of a terabyte, which seemed like a NASA sized server. That server ran about $20k. Of course it was RAID5 and all that.

Fast forward to today and you can buy a 1.5TB chip the size of your fingernail to stick in a camera or phone. And it's well under $100. That just amazes me.

I'm sure that I posted here about how I had to be the first person in my town with a 1 gigabyte hard drive, which was a boat anchor in 5.25 inch full-height, SCSI, and cost me an insane $1,820 plus tax.

The 128 gigabyte microSD card that's the size of a thumbnail and holds 128x what that boat anchor cost me back in the day was only $17.99 when I bought it a few months ago. It also has a faster transfer rate than the boat anchor, and microSD seek time is nearly instantaneous compared to the "blazing: 29ms average of that large rotating disk.

D'oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I smoked Tareyton. I got up to 2 packs a day. I quit when I was 23. I woke up after a party one day feeling horrible after drinking and smoking way too much. I looked in the mirror and said to myself, "Self, WTF are you doing?". So, I quit cold turkey right there on the spot. I'm certain I'd be in the ground if I'd kept going the way I was going.

...when your mortgage balance is down to three cents, and you have to walk into your bank with three shiny pennies to make the final payment because their online system can't close a mortgage without the borrower signing paperwork in person.

It took 19 years and 6 months to pay it off, but Chez Vreihen is finally all ours.....

You did okay, and here you are. Thank you for serving, especially at that time in history.

And thanks for the garage tour back when. :-) I should bring you up to speed on my collection some time. Three Lotus twincams in the garage these days!

I was #185. Smack dab in the middle. By my time they were not calling up anyone out of the single digits.

My folks were friends with a couple whose husband had contracted MS and was bedridden. They lived just up the hill from us. I'd go up and sit with him when his wife wanted a night off. (She drove a 356, white on red, and I was a little bit smitten with her and it.) I told him about my worries regarding the draft, and he told me to stop worrying, that war would be over before my number -- whatever it was -- got called. I didn't believe him. He was right.

...when you remember the introduction of Trix cereal back in the mid-'50s. I was there! My neighbor Mary Anne's mom bought some at the store when they first came out. She would give them to us as snacks. Everybody wanted to to to Mary Anne's house. 70 years later, Mary Anne and I are still friends. Our grandkids have play dates together. Yes, I'm old and enjoying every minute!

BTW, here's Mary Anne and me back then (1954) and more recently. Life long friendships are priceless.

Great question. Yes, of course she does. She has been with me each and every time we meet with Mary Anne. She was a good friend all of these years, never a romantic interest. Yes, it's possible!!

I remember as a youngster getting all excited about the new tv channels we'd be getting with our new box. I was then disappointed when the only channel on UHF was PBS.
