True. It's basically about mass. The 998 cc motor has larger and heavier pistons than the 748cc, and a longer stroke, which increases the gyroscopic effect leading to increased effort to initiate turn-in at corners. As I recall, the 999R used titanium connecting rods to reduce weight, as it had larger pistons running a shorter stroke than the 999/999S models.
Here's an article that helps describe the effect on handling: http://www.motorcycle.com/manufactur...rry-14509.html

How about something different?
I've been riding for many years, have owned many bikes. At one time I had seven, I'm down to four. Got a bum leg now. Don't know how to intersperse text/photos, so the photos will be at the bottom. Sizing got screwy, cntrl minus is one way to see the whole thing. Photo one. Here's the original sportbike <grin>. Period appropriate mods, bronze swingarm bushings, "progressive" springs, tapered roller steering bearings, bar end mirrors, etc. When I no longer rode my K75RT fast enough on tours to make the compromise between handling and touring appropriate, I replaced it with a Goldwing. The front forks have been Raceteched, Baker air wings and VStream windshield for weather protection. When my bum leg made that also inappropriate, I triked it with a DFT kit. Photo two. The DFT is awesome. Made of beautiful aluminum castings and chromated steel fabrications. Looks like an F1 car. Suspension is copied from a Jaguar XKE, including the four shocks. The rear wheels are lightweight track wheels, you hardly need anything more. On the sportbike front I used to own a Honda Superhawk 1000. Honda's imitation of a Ducati; fast, good handling (Raceteched forks again), and utterly reliable. My KLR650 got street tires and a track school once. Reg Pridmore's CLASS. He gave rides, it was fun to watch him pass guys on Suzuki GSX1000s on the outside. On a Honda VFR750, two up. The rider is so much important than the bike, moreso than with cars. Very cool story and bike! I'm glad you made the best of it and are still riding. Btw I did Reg Pridmore's CLASS also, back in the day on my Ducati 748S. It was the 3rd best* motorcycling decision I've ever made. Enjoy the hell out of it! -- * To explain, The 2nd best was going racing... The absolute best motorcycling decision I ever made? To start riding motorcycles!!! |

The Motorcycle Thread
I didn't see any posts when I searched, if I missed it I apologize, so I wanted to start up a thread where members can post what they ride and pictures of it when they're on twos and not in their cage.
I've been riding for some years now and have taken all of the MSF courses. I ride as much as I can because I enjoy it and it helps with my commute with HOV benefits. Current: K7 Suzuki GSXR 600 |

I tried searching for it as well but the search stinks on here for some reason. I typed "motorcycle" into the search and your thread didn't even pop up, despite having it in the title. Anyway, here's the thread: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=686219

The Off-Topic section is shared across all bimmerpost sites. I like the look of the F80 site so I go with that one. The "1Addicts" site I used to enter through used to make people uncomfortable when they walked up to my desk because it looks like an addiction support website.
