Been there...

Already had this great experience. Scared the crap out of me when it happened in my 2010 X5. Dealer told me it happens quite a bit on the 35i engine.

Anyone know if this affects Canadian models cars?

Just called the dealership and they said they haven't received anything regarding a recall yet.

I contacted my BMW service adviser about this and he said BMW will issue a letter when and if the recall becomes active. It will be VIN specific.

So what are the symptoms if this happens? My 2011 328i wagon has started a slight hesitation when I go to WOT when under ~2000 rpms and in a high gear, like 3rd at 15mph. Yesterday I was doing about 35mph in 5th and went to ~80% throttle and it had a really bad hesitation (lurching) and then suddenly my CEL came on and when I brought the car to a stop it was shaking like it was only running on 4 or 5 cylinders. My car was manufactured in 5/2010, so it could be affected, but the car is at 59k miles so out of warranty. I am planning to take it to an independent repair shop (Group 2) unless I have reason to believe it is related to the recall issue. I assume all recalls are repaired at no charge even if the car is out of warranty? Thanks!

No. N54 engines including the one we have in the 1M is not subject to this issue/recall. There is a relevant thread in the 1M section that you may like to check for confirmation as well.

Hmmm.... my car suddenly stalled while idling last Wednesday. Very first time that happend. N55 with 69k miles on it. Called Crevier in Santa Ana but they will not have the parts for this recall for the next couple of weeks.

Maybe the bolts should break and screw up the engine so I get a new one. I'm out of warranty.

so this is really wierd. I was in my 2013 F10 535i a month ago at a light dropping my son off at school. I have the engine start/stop engaged. so as I pressed the accelerator after the light turned green, the engine started but the car stalled. I was making a left turn on a light and it was a bit concerning. I immediately put car in park, mind to while folks beeping at me, turned the engine on and went off my way. After it happened 1 more time, I took it to the service center and they kept the car for the whole day running diagnostic with an ALL CLEAR. I was told to bring it back if it happens again. 15K miles.

hmmmm???

Is there any evidence to suggest cars with model years prior to 2010 with the same engines have the same defect?

I love this forum!
Cross-reference this post http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=951718
I looked up my VIN and it's not on the list yet, but I expect it will be in a month or so...
It's sweet too, because this will also fix the leaky seal I was gonna have fixed anyway! In a way, we can thank GM for their FU... Some BMW owners have known about this problem for a while and letters written to BMW have for the most part been ignored.

From what I understand BMW hasn't officially issued the recall right? I called my dealer and they were pretty dismissive by telling me that nothing is official yet.

Yeah but BMW always issues these on a rolling basis...doubtless to prevent service centers from being completely swamped all at once.

I wonder if the problem is more expansive than they originally thought back in July 13' or if USA Today screwed up the dates?
It's happened before (with other recalls) that the 'affected models' listing expanded over time (now including models to 2012?). Which has me interested since my E90 was produced just before the ones noted. I wonder what the change was, exactly... a new supplier for the bolts? A new fastening technique??

Not sure, but I've been searching a lot, and I haven't seen anything VANOS related on MY2013 cars yet... Might just be because they are too new still...

I don't buy this "this date to this date" recall. I had the airbag issue and my car was one month out of the recall notice. BMW would not honor it until I wrote a complaint letter. In fact my independent couldn't believe that they wouldn't even try it. If I was one/two months out of this recall, I'd be all over it.

What is the death code? Mine has 69k on it and still running strong.

So did Crev BMW acknowledge the recall and parts needed? I spoke with BMWNA and they said it's not officially a recall campaign as of yet.

My 2011 535i died on the freeway today. FYI two BMW Assist tow trucks came and both of them didn't know how to get the car into N when the engine wouldn't start.

My car is at the dealer now getting diagnosed.

I spoke to a service adviser who told me that the official recall has not started yet and they do not have the right parts to fix the cars. He told me that I should keep an eye on it and he expects the parts to come in in the next 3-4 weeks.

Sucks about your car man, keep us updated.
