What's wrong with a 40k car for their first car? It's not your money.

What if their gross income is 1 million dollars per year. 40k car is just 4% of their income.

I had a E90 335 as my first car. Many will hate but I also went to the track and had driving lessons. Just make sure you trust him with whatever you are buying and get him some driving lessons so if he does drive recklessly he knows what to do if anything happens

If you're gonna spoil him, it will make him 100,000X happier if you take him to the dealership to choose whatever he really wants. I'd take him to Scion, Subaru, Ford, Chevrolet, BMW, Merc. Let him choose exactly what he wants.

Late 1960's Chevy (camaro, chevelle, el camino) manual transmission, that doesn't run. Get him enrolled in shop class and use the rest of the money to help him with the parts. Help him MAKE his own first car. He'll cherish it forever and a chevy small block v8 will make him feel like a man. I still have my '72 el camino and am planning a frame up resto on it in the next 10 years.

I agree with all the other posts that emphasise making sure a teenager really appreciates cars. This worked for me, 13 years ago or so. Now I can drive anything you put me in and do just about any mechanical maintenance/ work necessary for when I have an auto off of warranty. (I'm just no good with body work.. don't have the hands for it)

That's my humble opinion, but then I'm just climbing the class ladder. Some people probably expect to just have nice things on demand.

Great recommendation. The kid doesn't need too much hp and its the perfect price point that he didn't get too big in the britches and and gives him something to look forward to when he is able to make his own money.

Don't think that is a good idea. Imagine getting in a car crash in a 1960 car with no air bags.

Amazing how far we've come with car safety. I have to say $40k is a lot for a first car. But that could only be a small percentage of his income (as others have said). But IMO he should not be given the best of the best as his first car, he won't be able to appreciate a great car in the future. My first car was a beater, a 99' Civic coupe with roll-up windows, no power anything, and the radio didn't even have a tape deck let alone a CD player. I drove the crap out of the car and had a ton of fun none-the-less. It never missed a beat despite how much I abused it haha! As a result, owning my 135i now makes me appreciate it even more. In addition driving a slower car made me learn the limits of a car's handling much easier and it will make you a better driver in the long run.

All the more reason to emphasize proper training. The best protection from accidents is good defensive driving (sounds a bit like a gun debate lol). I drove the shit out of my El Camino as a young man, and despite the best efforts of the dumbass drivers in America, I never got in an accident.

You can't knock classic cars just because of a lack of modern safety equipment. They're CLASSICS! And with driving one comes a responsibility that one inherently learns as they put together and care for the car.
