I use it as a hotspot. Primarily for my son's iPad but also for our phones. Not sure what other functionality in the car is activated by the e-Sim?

The cost is about 8,50 euro per month. For 20, I would reconsider. But my experience with using my phone as a hotspot while also using carplay is not always positive. Works for a while and then it decides that it can't do both at the same time for a while.

That said. It worked fine for the first weeks. Then it didn't connect for 2 days and now it's working fine again. Not sure what happened. NO updates.

No. Mine stopped working again. Have an appointment on Thursday regarding winter wheels and while they are at it, they will check this and some other minor issues.

But, on a Dutch forum someone reached out to Ubigi. They mentioned that there is a known issue in the BMW software which causes failing connections.

That sounds correct to me. Even though my eSIM is working, I am frequently getting automated email notifications and texts from my carrier (T-Mobile) indicating that the changes to my eSIM have been completed. It's almost as if it stops working, but T-Mobile has some automated way of "refreshing" or "reconnecting" it so that it continues to work.

For example, I looked at my last three days of emails: over a 3 day period, from Friday to Sunday, I have received 22 emails indicating the following:
Your SIM change is complete
Hi JASON ,
The requested SIM change for your number ending in 8538 is complete. Your new SIM is activated and allows you access to the T-Mobile network.
Your security is important to us. If you didn’t change your SIM or device, please call Customer Care.
(800) 937-8997
Thank you,
Your T-Mobile Team
When I first started getting these messages after the car update, I contacted T-Mobile because it had also added 3 new $0 lines to my account. After they deleted those, they said to call back if it happens again. As expected, it happened again, so I called back and they opened a T-Mobile ticket and told me that I would not have to call back for this issue - they will "handle it". Although the messages keep coming, and new lines keep getting added to my account, the new lines also get deleted with no intervention from me.

I consider myself lucky compared to some.
  • At least my service has never stopped functioning.
  • Although the automated emails and texts are annoying, I will probably go change my notification settings or just set a rule to automatically file those emails if they come in so I don't have to see them all the time.
  • Hopefully BMW will figure this out for the next update which will hopefully get applied soon.

Over on the i7 forum someone got the 11/2024 update to the firmware and said that the eSIM issue had been fixed by it. Might want to have a look.

Wow, how is the thing able to add new lines to your account?

Something in the handshake between the eSim, the BMW onboard software and T-Mobile?

Something tells me, that there are numerous 'tickets' opened between the two companies. If this isn't resolved by the time mine arrives, maybe I should hold off for a bit (I have T-Mobile also).

I have ATT esim in 2 cars, G70 and G60. It is linked to my Iphone 16Pro. It was working in my 7 series and then I let it connect in the 5 series. That seems to have killed it for both. I have the dreaded you have completed 3 of 4 steps message in both cars. My 7 is going in for an oil change next week and I will ask them to put in software 11/2024 to see if it fixes it, and then figure out a way to have the 5 not connect. I have been dealing with esim issues since Nov 2022 and if there is any more aggravation I'm just going to cancel it.

I don't know how it does it, just that it does. I'm not too worried because of two things: 1) It still works, and 2) the lines it adds to my account are priced at $0/month. So, even if T-Mobile didn't delete them, I would not get charged for them.

It's clearly a bug of some type and they are aware of it and trying to deal with it. Hopefully it will just go away with the next car OTA update.

I’ve had the same thing happening with Verizon and the eSIM issues. I have occasionally gotten a weird random text from Verizon saying that a new unit is paired to share the phone number for my cell. I think their setup allows for 3 car eSIMs to be paired with a single cell number.

I contacted them and they said no, it doesn’t incur another charge and that their system recognizes it’s the same eSIM each time, it’s just that the car seems to be trying to re-pair the eSIM. Or whatever.

In a much earlier thread, before many of us were aware of the issue, I mentioned that it seemed to me like the eSIM in the i5 was trying only to use 5G connectivity. I think it was just the way the issue was happening and I was coincidentally only noticing it in the 5G voids on my commute. The specs I’ve found say that the car’s radio is backwards compatible with 4G and should use that without issue should 5G not be working.

I look forward to the resolution of this issue. And just wish they’d be more transparent. I mean, they’re clearly talking about it, but people are having to get pretty involved with asking for information.

I7 with verizon number share eSIM.

Same story. And every time they reactivate my vehicle (to troubleahoot) it kills my watch number share connection.

Killed the eSIM for now

Reached out to Ubigi, the network provider we can use with the e-sim in the Netherlands. Got a total refund. Reason is that there is a known issue in the BMW software which deletes user accounts.
Once this is fixed, they will get in contact to activate a create a new account.

Was told today by genius that we have to wait for next update expected mid December or you can go into dealer to update car now. He said shouldn’t be a charge since it’s a known issue. Debating if I want to wait 2-3 weeks

No 11/2024.30 does not fix it. I had my G70 in last week and the tech notes are that Esim would not install properly and this would be fixed in a future software update. Unless there’s a new update or Europe is different, it isn’t fixed yet.
