Ok, I have only had my 550e since last night so not much experience with her yet. 30 mile ride from dealer to dinner to home last night went from 95% charge to 3%. Drove it in every mode and drove her for fun. This morning to the office, 20 mile ride. Started at 50% and still had 50% when I got there. I mostly drove her in sport mode today. She fell to 45-46 a couple times and recharged to the 50%. Extremely comfortable and nimble and sporty ride. Sport mode is a beast, I can not get the ambient lighting off red when in sport mode, anyone else? I love the car so far but have much learning as far as modes and driving style to get the most efficiency while having fun. I look forward to the miles ahead and figuring it out.

Curious, what mode were you in during the drive home from the dealer? E only?

I believe it is not possible to change the ambient color from red if you are in sports mode.

Spent time in every mode, checking and playing with each... 7 modes and reality is sport mode is the lesser draw on battery than others it was a lot of use

I believe you can only change the ambient light colors when in Personal mode.

Adaptive as well.

Edit: I'm getting roughly 40 miles per charge through the first 5 days.

I'd be very happy with 40+- mile electric range. I'm at the port, hope for my 550e delivery next week.

Thanks.

First two days is 40 miles per charge but driving style really affects the final result. Seems I can go half mile and lose a mile or two and lose one. My go to seems to be sport comfort as of right now. IMHO the car is not an efficient electric car and was meant for performance.

40 miles sounds pretty good to me. I would have expected a little more, based on some of the YouTube reviews from the EU. But, I suspect you are correct, you may have some "new owner driving" effect in the range estimates. Keep us posted!!!

Are you charging to 100% or another amount? How far are you running down the battery?

Yes.. 100 percent and always says 40 miles. Usually run down to 35-55 percent before home and charging again.

Are any of you charging from a standard 120V residential circuit? If so, how long does it take to go from near zero to 100%? I may not be able to install a 240v at home, and even the 120V may require a short extension cord.

I am charging with 120v right now and works for me .. it is always fully charged in the morning. I will install 240 at some point as we have a hot tub on 120 as well and need to get 240 to it... Two bird kind of thing.

I just spoke with BMW Genius and they told me if I charge from 0-100%, it could take up to 30 hours (really or is this BS?). Also they are very firm in saying not use an extension cord. Problem is that it brings in more resistance to the line and they don't warranty that it will work properly. Plus more chance of fire. The estimate to bring the 240v power to the garage from my panel (over 65 ft) will probably cost well in excess of $3500. And this is with industry connections based upon my being an Architect. Things are unfortunately more expensive here in California. :-(

12 hours tops... Usually 8-10 and it's full charge on120v. Extension cord problem makes sense

The reason is it's liability. It's just easier to say do not use an extension cord because there are so many types, lengths, and gauge of wires and some electrical safety considerations(bad plugs, not being seated completely together, etc.). The most realistic reason out of those is really the gauge of wires used in the extension cord. the comment about resistance is silly because if you match or increase the AWG used in the extension cord it will not be a problem. remember there are wires in the walls from the breaker box that could be on the other side of the house to the outlet you are plugging into, far longer length then any extension cord you probably are thinking of using. So what about that resistance? lol yeah maybe if the extension cord is hundreds of feet long. As I indicated already the key is making sure you use an extension cord that is same if not larger AWG (larger gauge is what I would do) and can handle the amperage of the load, period.

Agree 100%. I had this validated by an electrician as well. He just told me to buy a lower gauge heavy duty one and I’d be totally fine. This was for my wife’s JGC hybrid at the time - had no issues. Eventually correctly grounded the wall outlet 110 where it still is.

The 30 hour figure sounds like the standard answer for charging an i5 using 120V. However, the 550e battery is much smaller in capacity, so should not take that long at all.

I believe you are correct. Best the "Genius" got a bit confused as they are mostly dealing with i5s, not PHEVs.

Currently waiting to see what my projected lease payment will be.

My 550e delivered yesterday!

After a few trips around town, I am showing about 40mi every time I charge. Very pleased with this.

BTW, does anyone know where the switch is for Battery Control?

Thanks,

Andrew

I do not but will play around next time I'm in the car.... I haven't had the time in it I wanted so far as the week after I picked it up I had business in SF for a week. Hoping to not be so busy after Thanksgiving to spend more time with the car. Remember reading discussion on battery control but haven't come across it yet.
