Is the liquid underneath the car part of this AC problem? I noticed there is water-like substance underneath my i5 in my garage floor every time i move the car from garage.... however, there is no water-like substance underneath my other car in the same garage..

Water under the car is not the problem. The problem is a loud dripping noise that you can hear inside the car.

It is normal to find water under a car after the AC has been running for a while, but I don't think anyone here can tell you if the fluid you are finding is water from the AC or something else...

Is this problem unique to the M60? I recently started to hear a similar sounding noise on my eDrive 40.

The service bulletin about it said something about cars built in or prior to December I think it was. Could be either one I think.

Just look at the bulletin in post #65 of this thread.

How do I find out if my i5 is manufactured prior to December 2023? The side door sticker doesn't sure manufacture date...

Yes, I sometimes can hear the loud dripping noise when the car sits quietly. But not every time, I couldn't find a pattern when the noise occurs. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. So the noise may not be present when I take my i5 to service, in case the service advisor wants me to demonstrate when the noise occurs.

I was just asking if fixing the dripping noise would also make the water under the car go away....

Try plugging your VIN into this website. It worked for my VIN - gave me the manufacturer date.

It's interesting that the service bulletin says the AC noise is for vehicles manufactured before December 2023, but my i5 is produced in Feb 2024, and I still hear the same knocking noise.... so maybe the service bulletin is not the fix for my i5?

Mine is also from Feb ‘24… but it still had the sound. I get my car back tomorrow and will advise if it fixed the issue, but my service advisor said the drain plug (or funnel) was of the “old” design.

So, after such a repair, where you know they’ve had to remove the battery and stuff, how much do you expect to have to redo settings-wise? Is some of it in the BMW Cloud with your BMW ID? Do you lose garage door codes?

I’ll also find all this out tomorrow. I guess I’m just curious as to how this works for such a BEV.

Look forward to your update and hope all works well and you don't have to reset everything. Will be making an appointment for mine this week. I took delivery end November and it makes the noise for sure.

Update!

So there’s good news and bad news.

The good news: they say the thump is gone, that yes, that SB is the fix. Hooray.

Bad news, somehow … a window broke. Back driver’s side window. They sent a pic, it’s very fine-lines shattered, being held in place by the tint film. So they are “expediting” a new window to replace it.

So it’ll be a few more days before I can get the car. Ah well. Of course now the app tells me there’s a software update also.

Stuff happens, I get it. They were super apologetic and the shop foreman or manager or whatever called after I texted the service advisor. Eh. I just wish the loaner were more fun to drive.

So the SB fix didn't cause the window to break, right? If the two are not related, then it's good news (if it's just the technicians being careless)...

I asked two dealership's service department near me (in Southern California), but both told me they aren't aware of any dripping noise issue... I am kinda worried that I have to explain to them again, and the dripping sound doesn't show when I explain to them cuz the sound doesn't occur all the time....

No, I can’t think of a reason the repair would break the window.

Above in an earlier post someone linked the SB, you should be able to bring that to service department.

You could also point them to the YouTube video that someone posted in the forum here. That video clearly let you hear the noise from within the cabin.

I took my i5 to my local dealer (in Los Angeles area) for inspection, but they couldn't duplicate the same knocking noise... the service advisor told me to make a video next time this happens.

so it seems like this problem isn't really known among So Cal dealers....

You could always pretend my video is one you took if the (visible) interior is similar enough. It may not currently be humid enough in SoCal for a big enough droplet of water to form in that funnel. Come to the swamp! It would happen as soon as the A/C kicked on here when I walked near the car.

Someone asked about eDrive vs M60 and the SB linked earlier just specifies i5 and i7. Since it’s a single part change I wonder if the exact date of when the part actually hit the production lines isn’t known.

I am not going to jinx myself with posting when I’m getting my car back on account of last time a window broke so I’ll just say I’ll post when I can…

another reason the dealer tech gave up after testing for a day is the Service Bulletin is for i5 produced before december 2023, but my i5 is produced in feb 2024.... does the production date really matter? if i am hearing noise, but my car is not produced before dec 2023, they won't do anything regarding the SB?

Just picked mine up. Drove home in 91 degree, 90% humidity… with a silent air conditioner!

Nice!

The actual repair about two days. Getting them to tie the repair to that service bulletin took involvement from Germany, and it did take a little time to get that part. I think probably like … 10 days all told?

They were very transparent about involving BMW, given how involved the repair is (with dropping the battery). They told me before they did something that drastic they wanted BMW to confirm it applied. They even used my video.

I know the bulletin says the part was identified and changed Dec 2023 but it makes me wonder if some of the old parts made it into production. Also, given their explanation of what’s wrong with the old part, every vehicle with that part would make this sound in higher humidity. Desert heat might never do it.

But they did a good job as far as I can tell, and it’s now just air conditioning without a psycho bass drum track.
