Side note, I had to drop her off last night for service. Rain/storms were in the forecast. I was actually a little worried about leaving her in the service shops parking lot overnight. My girlfriend got a good laugh out of that.

Absolutely. I used to have a 440i F32 as my weekend car and a full size pickup truck as my daily driver. Now I drive a Chevy Volt to work. I charge in at home on a Level 2 charger and Level 1 at work. My fuel consumption has gone down to 6 gallons per 2000 miles.
On the weekend I drive a large gas guzzling Tahoe around town and enjoy burning 15 MPG of sweet sweet fossil fuel. |

One thing I would like to add is I think this varies greatly by location/situation. (maybe this is obvious).
I live in northern Illinois and my round trip commute is 75 miles in relatively heavy traffic and not really fun to drive roads (aside from speed I guess). The shop I work for, I would usually need to park outside so any "special" car gets dusty and sun beaten all day long just for me to battle traffic on the way home. ...not really rewarding. So, I have no problem having a comfy daily driver and saving the "special" cars ready to go in the garage for times they can be enjoyed to the fullest. If I lived in california or some area that my drive to work was low traffic, awesome roads and a carport or garage when I arrived, would probably have only one or two cars. |

I was fortunate to have onsite garage parking at my last employer, which made driving her to work easier to do, and my commute was only 10 minutes.

Yup, I've got an SUV for the wife and roadtrips. A beater for whomever needs it. An i3 I used to take to work before WFH due to covid, and and M3 CS for weekend/track duty.
I still take the M3 CS out on weekdays for random errands when I feel like having some fun, but it's mostly for track days. apex-0896-Edit_100 by JMG, on Flickr

I have a few weekend cars, 911 GTS, F10 M5 and an e39 M5. My daily is a pick up. The two Ms got a combined 3k miles last yr. starting to drive them more lately, even in some rain today.

I do kind of see where the OP is going with this. It's one thing to have a sick weekend car and also a nice daily. But I never understood the point of having some amazing weekend machine and then driving a POS for the majority of the year. I mean you have to start looking at quality of life at that point, lol.

I used to do the weekday beater thing and it eventually got old. Driving an old Honda or VW 90% of the time while you have a beast just sitting in the garage is tough to sort out mentally, let alone justify.
Once I became full time wfh, I decided to consolidate and now my fun car and my daily is an X3M comp. Best decision I ever made.

Some of my offices either aren't in the best areas, use valet parking, have tight parking spots, bad roads or steep driveways. I would hate to drive my lowered M3 CS with a low and protruding carbon fiber front lip into some of the garages, alleys, and driveways I had to navigate. Not caring or worrying is a luxury in itself.

I don't have a weekend car but why bother when the M6 can do everything so well?
Light off-roading is fine with Sport Cup 2s

One of my former beater is a 96 Civic coupe with wind up windows, a year of driving and 60k of mileage later (I was younger granted) -Its dirt cheap on gas -It helps that it actually drives better thanks to its light weight and no ABS -It doesn't go wrong, and if it does it isn't burdened by electronics and complexities of a more modern 'nicer' daily -It handles the highway plenty fine though I do wish i had cruise and power windows so I don't have to reach over to open/close the passenger side window -I can park it anywhere without ever (and I do mean ever) worry about coming back to a scratch or a dent on it, or stolen -I do not feel bad every time a truck of any kind throws up stones, salt spray at my beater -I do not feel bad about the car rusting to nothing, because it cost me 1700 bucks and Ontario probably spent the equivalent of that on salting a yard of road way every time we get below zero celcius. If it does not snow where you are and your government doesn't spray salt/gravel/deicer like it is free then perhaps a nicer daily would be nice, but here, with crap roads, crap drivers, crap weather it is really hard to justify spending a shit ton on a beater that will rust the moment it touches the snow. Also, it weeds out certain unfavorable personality traits when I was single and dating. I had leased a 15 Golf before, and while that is a decent daily, its quiet, its good on gas, it has modern tech like heated seats, it is complicated, it has the personality of a pencil, its 5 speed is burdensome and lacks feel.

The first time I was able to do this was back in 2002. I had an S2000 and purchased an old '89 Starion as my daily to keep the miles and inclement weather away from the S2K. I found it worked so well that I've had a weekend toy/daily since that time.
Currently I have 3 cars because my M2 was supposed to be my daily, but I like it so much that I ended up getting a daily to keep the miles/weather off of it (my original weekend toy is now an investment). In some ways I prefer my daily to my M2. It's quiet, comfortable, reliable, easy ingress and egress, inexpensive to maintain, and it blends in with the crowd. But in other ways the M2 satisfies me in a way my daily could never. I've often asked myself if I could live with one car, and the answer is a resounding "no." I like preservation too much. If I really like something I want to keep it as nice as possible for as long as possible, and that just can't be done using it in all weather and in all circumstances. |
