If the price was comparable to the market I would. The market that American wants is Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. So in that market the others win. MB and BMW will be double in price. Some dumbass will just to blvd cruise.

While a BMW truck could look quite good, if I ever did buy a truck it would still be GM or Ford. There's a lot that goes into engineering a good truck chassis and they have had it figured out for a long time.

As bad as a Lambo SUV, but it hits closer to home. Hope it never happens, but pretty sure it will if truck sales keep booming.

I get really sick of this gutless corporate herd mentality - rather than try to define yourself, or perhaps even distinguish a niche, most companies are trying to find the center point of the cash curve and edge themselves into it. Like a bunch of sheep, and with about that much to distinguish one from another. Granted there aren't a ton of us who are going to want performance driving machines, but probably as many as will want a BMW truck (I keep hearing that with the inflection like from the salsa ad - made in neeew york city?).

This is true, I suppose it would depend on the target audience. A few questions:

1) Would this be a performance road car the likes of the X5M or an actual luxury utility vehicle?

2) Has BMW ever had an actual locking t-case/diff setup for real 4WD?

3) Where would costs for R&D take us? A new F-150 Raptor will run you $60-75k...A new X5 starts around there...This would easily be a six figure truck and no one who wants a truck for the utility purpose will pay that.

I sold my E46 M3 a while back because I was moving too much equipment around and needed a truck. I bought a new Toyota Tacoma. I was extremely displeased because it lacked performance, technology, and fuel economy. I traded and bought a used X5 that was 6 years older and 1000lbs heavier. The X5 was way cheaper, had more horsepower, better fuel mileage, better handling, more technology, better ground clearance, and was more comfortable. EDIT: The X5 also had negligible towing spec differences. If BMW can bring these things to a truck I would buy it, but they would need a good price point.

Let's face it, if BMW can exploit sales by monkey see monkey do, they will.

I will have to disagree with you on a few points.

1) technology wise: my 13 F150 fx4 has heated cooled seats, rear cam, remote start, nav, Bluetooth, and it support multiple phones plugged in and multiple Bluetooth attachments, 120v plug. For me to update the nave I simply plug in a sd card. If you ask me the F150 has same if not more technology.

2) Fuel mileage: my past e90 averaged 13-14 mpg based on the 40k miles I drive it(includes 6.0 mpg on track days). The x5 50 has averaged 13.4 over the 55k miles it has been driven so far. My F150(302 coyote v8) has averaged 14.4 over 65k and it has a level and 305/50/20's and it tows a 12' enclosed trailer at times . I call that a win for the truck.

3) Performance: that's easy, a pickup truck will never out perform a BMW SAV. I have upgraded my brakes and have a fox 2.0 suspension which helps but it is still a 6k truck designed to haul shit loads.

4) Luxury: the x5 wins but full leather in the F150 is not bad. The supercrew has tons of space and my kids prefer the F150 on road trips compared to the x5.

Maybe the F150 is nicer than the Toyota or I have a better trim package but I do not compare my Ford to my BMW's. Completely different vehicles for different uses.

I would definitely buy one. BMW has great designs, look at the X6, no one likes it, but a lot of people buy it. Texas would be a hot sell!

You make good points. Ford also retains resale value way better than BMW, except M's, which is why you can buy a used BMW for less than half the original price only a few years later.

Totally different vehicles and manufacturers. No auto manufacturer can be the end all be all, and I'd never advocate purchasing a new BMW, but purchasing a used BMW vs purchasing a used Raptor I'd go BMW. That was kind of my original point.

I'm glad Ford put the tax payer's money to good use when they took out the government loan and were actually able to pay it back. R&D and collaboration moves the industry forward and I'm glad the US is staying in the game.

BTW, I average just over 14 mpg in my X5M and drive it pretty hard...you drive mostly city?

I was talking about the concept of German Trucks the other day. I think the market has room for one, definitely!

But...the Mercedes platform would be better if it was based on the G Wagon in Pickup form. More rugged, brash, and already offroad capable. We don't need another Honda Ridgeline attempt.

Quoting this because I feel it needs repeating. There is a market for luxury pickups. The majority of 1/2 ton crew cab full leather trucks are commuter queens for status and capability. They are not the work trucks, and they might see some mulch or home depot runs.

Price a German pickup 10k above an F150 platinum, but offer a cooler powertrain, better interior, good towing, and more features. Easily 50k a year volume and we know car manufacturers invest in projects for less than that.
Hell, just carry over the 50i and 35d powertrains on a heavier chassis. New transmission and differentials. Done Deal.
