Oh that's a shame. Glad there weren't any M5s in there, that would be wrecking a real performance vehicle.

Wow.. I kind of dodged a bullet also. My car (Euro Delivery, nonetheless) came in a couple of days ago and I couldn't remember if the dealer had told me whether it was coming into NY or NJ. Needless to say, I was in panic mode for about a couple of hrs until I finally got cell phone service while travelling and contacted the dealer.
Turned out my car was on the ship to NY instead, but man.. that totally sucks for all of the affected owners... Sorry if this was already addressed.. but what exactly is the deal with the ED cars? Does BMW have a different obligation (if any) for these cars vs. the unsold cars?

ED cars are not owned by BMW and would be covered by your own car's insurance, not the ins. policy BMW has for shipping new cars.

Ja, the Port of NY is the Port Authority of NY and NJ. Or something like that.
But cars don't come into NY.

What's scary is those cars with cosmetic damages that can be repaired will be repaired and sold as new. Better have a paint thickness measuring device on hand before you accept your car . This just sucks if you're in the market for a new Bimmer right now.

The marine ins. for e.d. is quite comprehensive, I don't think that there will be a problem if the car is significantly damaged but if the damage is minor, it will be repaired, not replaced.

I hope so but still it's the thought of your new car that you spent little time with getting damaged before you have it in your garage. |

That's the big difference for e.d. owners - they have already bonded.

The worst part it that these will be fixed with Bondo at the VPC and the customers will never know.

You joke but the VDC doesn't fix parts - they replace everything (doors, fenders, wheels). Everything they take off is junked so it doesn't pop up elsewhere.

Buyer Beware!
I got a car that was repaired at the port a few years ago. Did not know it. About 3 months later I noticed the rear qp, was not the same color as the rear pd. Brought it to the dealer and confirmed it. They wanted to repair, I made the dealer buy the car back, out of lease. They were even willing to give me a whole new door, and told them hell no. Ask for disclosue at signing and a buy back agreement.

Anyone has an idea how cars are prepared for shipment? Are they strapped down at the wheel? If so is this why the wheels and axles are bent?

I took a picture when I was on a vessel in Bremerhaven recently. They are tied down via the tow hooks.

Sure, tied down for the voyage. And then untied so they can be unloaded. If the vessel lists at that point . . . as I said somewhere, it's just lucky if nobody got hurt.

For others, details will be sparse and it will probably be days before BMW says anything, I can promise everyone that. Keep in mind that these vessels hold thousands of cars so perhaps 10% of capacity was impacted. Don´t panic (yet) please.

So... some smooth talking sailor lured you aboard, eh?
I can't believe you fell for the "c'mere, I want to show you something" line.
