I would have to think long and hard about a Z06 vs a GT3. One is pure performance and the other is pure driver's car. The GT3 would probably more fun more of the time but on the highway that Z06 would wipe the floor with about anything out there.

The 991 GT3 retails around $145k, but good luck buying one for less than $160k. That's a $60k premium over the Z06. And the Z06 should beat the GT3 on most road courses and obliterate it in the straights.

New Z06 has been stated (by GM) to be quicker around the track than the ZR1.
I'm not seeing any Porsche even close to the top of the list. The quickest Porsche is the GT2RS with 620hp and it's ranked at number 11 and the GT3RS is 19. ZR1 is number 2 and the Z06 is 5. http://fastestlaps.com/tracks/laguna_seca.html It'll be interesting to see where the McLaren 650S comes in since it's been vastly improved over the MP4-12C. Also, the new GT3RS will be interesting. Again, it's going to be down at least 150hp from the Z06.

IMHO: A manual gearbox would be more fun and involving than a PDK. Remember, Porsche isn't offering a manual trans in the GT3. You get a choice with the Z06.

I used to feel that way, daily drove one of the best 6-speed transmissions on the planet (s2000) for 5 years. Just picked up a DCT 135i and there is nothing like flicking through gears like an F1 driver, I can only imagine in a GT3 it would be even more engaging. After 10-months of daily driving and autocrossing the 135i I would say the DCT is just as fun and involving, but in a different way. You get so much more freedom to focus on perfect braking and corner entry it's insane.

Ugh, that GT-R video is terrifying. I cannot believe they crested a hill like that in an oncoming lane at what, 100mph? Authorities need to track down whoever the hell was in either of those cars and have their licenses revoked alone with jail time and heavy fines. That was completely outrageous.

Miata's and the BRZ/FRS are called the best driver cars in the world, so it seems the slowest cars are the ones people consider the best. Even if that means there are 10+ more cars that are faster than it on any road course.

Like I said, IMHO, there's nothing like a manual transmission for full involvement. I race a 335 in endurance races and am in the car sometimes for three hours straight. Shifting never gets old to me. Yes, I can imagine that a DCT will allow you to conscentrate more on braking etc, but there's still no better feeling than actually doing it yourself, lap after lap. Many enthusiasts have stated that there is something missing with the new GT3 because it's a PDK.

There is something to be said for rowing through the gears without commiting a felony by the third shift. Fast is great but sometimes slower and engaging is more enjoyable.

True.
Wringing the snot of a car with low/mid power levels and using it to it's full potential can be fun and much more involving than tracking a high power car that barely gets past 3rd gear except on long straights. That's why I'd choose an M Coupe for a track car, easily. |

The BRZ/FRS are well balanced while not making so much power that you get yourself into trouble if you're too reckless. Like driving a go kart. |

Its the reason why I love people who just go with the crowd. Go to a tracking event and see Porsche after Porsche after Porsche then 1 guy in something inferior, like a Vette or Mustang or Camaro, having the time of his life and passing them like nothing.
If I were to pick a car, its going to be the one I can have fun in....even if that means I'm pushing my luck with every corner. I'd love to own a GT3 RS but I would like to own a C6/C7 Z06.....MP4 12C.....Agera R......Hellcat.....GT500.....1LE.....Boss 302....anything fast and fun....even a FRS/BRZ. I'm a car guy all around, no matter what badge is on the car. Last edited by Vigilante375; 08-05-2014 at 07:47 PM.. |

People are so defensive these days.
Aren't cars about fun and games ? I mean if you want to be efficient and spend your money wisely you would buy a camry for a DD and not w/e cars you drive (unless you do drive a camry). My brother in law bought a GT3 RS a few years ago and now he owns the 991 turbo, I believe he paid just south of 200k for the turbo. He is a Porsche nut and will not consider any other sports car. I drove it and yes it's a great car, but I wouldn't spend that money on it. I still respect the car. Just like how I respect the Corvette for being an awesome car (to drive). For me personally at the end of a track day, it doesn't matter how fast I went or whether or not I finished with the best time. It's whether or not I can grin at the end of the day. Comparing one's preference (efficiency vs aesthetics) is like having Scarlett Johansson approach you begging you to have a child with her, half of you will say yes and the other half will say no; either way everyone has their preference and will defend their choice (maybe a bad analogy but, hey I'm bored at work).

Considering the Z06 has super car performance as well, it is definitely one of my most desirable cars. I also saw a Viper GTS this morning, and it is amazing a well, but not easily mistaken for a Ferrari.

with all this talk about GT3 VS z06.
IMO there is just something special about having a GT3 sitting in your garage. Not to mention that new GT3 engine is already such a legendary engine. All motor, revving to 9k RPM. more motorsports style of engine. Where the Z06 and corvette overall is more mainstream, and really nothing new. Big S/C V8 motor in a lightweight car. i have nothing but respect for the Z06 though, and i want one just as much as i want a GT3. both are great cars, they both have different things going for them. |

A salesman started a Z51 with the sport exhaust I was sitting in, it had a very angry growl and I loved it. The interior is not the same level of any modern German car in terms of quality (even our e9X), but it's a huge step up from the C6 and overall it's pleasing to the eyes and touch. Also the red interior adds a lot when you see it in person, nicer red color than the BMW red interior. |
