Expert - Are you sure automatic high beams are turned on? There is a setting in the light controls.

I'm guessing you did hit the Save button after making the change right? Might be a silly question, but you never know.

If it's any consolation, I did the same as you a couple days ago and just downloaded the OTA update today. It will probably be transferred to the car tomorrow, and after that I can let you know if it worked for me.

The only thing I can think of here is this: Maybe each update does not fully write over each after of the software.

I had a dealer-installed updated in between OTAs to address initial bugginess I was finding after I had made the 5AP change. That did not enable anti-dazzle, although the guy who taught this method of doing it believed it would and a similarly applied (but different) dealer update had done so for him. It was only after the prior OTA update they came to life; it remained so after this update.

So, maybe not every update touches this area of the code to make the change?

I am in exactly the same predicament as aaexpert.

Will wait and see what future OTA updates result in. I may even "harass" my friendly dealer for some kinda software install just to see what happens. I'll be there soon for first oil change.

I also used BimmerUtility to uncheck 5AP and did the update. I *think* it enabled the anti-dazzle, per MikeElmendorf's statement about the light indicator staying blue even with a car just in front of me. I've not had enough time yet to see the effects with oncoming traffic and a situation where I can judge what it's doing.

I also notice that the indicator turns to green sometimes....not sure just what that's about. But auto-dimming is definitely enabled (double-checked that).

If it is working, you'll see the light pattern noticeably adjusting around cars. Only works when totally dark (headlights will come on automatically brighter than this will engage) and I think above 30mph.

Thanks again MikeElmendorf...am working on convincing my wife to take her car out tonight and trying it out on an isolated, dark road very close to us. We'll see....

This morning I double-checked that the 5AP I removed with BimmerUtility was still removed after the OTA update. It was still removed, but I was not able to verify functionality tonight on a dark two lane road. Hopefully tomorrow or Wednesday.

Skyking - May be obvious, but you’ll only be able to see it do its thing if there is another car oncoming or in front of you.

Understood. My earlier comment may have been ambiguous - I meant to say that I didn't get a chance to go out last night to test it at all.

Sounds like SkykingUSA needs to get on it and report back to the group ASAP. Folks here are like depending on you.

Your high-pressure tactics worked. I just got back from a drive on a two-way highway, 55 mph, no street lights and it appears that the anti-dazzle is NOT working. Every time a car approached me, the headlights indicator in the instrument cluster went from blue to green and I could clearly see both headlights lower ahead of me. The high beam indicator did not stay blue as oncoming cars passed me.

I suppose removing the 5AP from my FA did not work for some reason. As I wrote previously, I did verify that it was still removed after the OTA update as well. Not sure where to go from here. I wish I knew why it worked for some folks, but not for me. I wonder if there is another setting somewhere indicating that it is a USA car which might be preventing it. I wish I knew.

That’s all I did and I’m in US. That’s the option that “decodes” it. Automatic high beams are turned on?

Again my only theory is that this update did not touch that area of code.

Dang it. I so was hoping this really would work. In previous models and videos I have watched there was another code you had to remove along with 5AP. I think it was 8S4.

Migs -

I think 8S4 applies only to earlier vehicles. If I look at my M60, there is no such option code there in the build.

I believe this related to when the headlights physically turned. They no longer do this on our cars and that is accomplished (to some degree) by the LEDs.

Hopefully you are correct and a future OTA update will turn this feature on for me. I was also wondering if there is a difference between i5 models - you have an M60 and I have an eDrive40.

My car also does not have 8S4 in the list of codes currently.

Just keeping my fingers crossed that a future update might activate this feature.

I wonder if you have to wait for an OTA that actually requires programming the FDL models? You made the change to the VO but maybe if the FDL isn't programmed during the OTA nothing really happens yet.

I get the green A icon too when the lights are on, and it will automatically flip between green and blue when the high beams come on and off on their own.

The way updates work is that the update flashes the specific unit that needs an update and then the VO is read to set the appropriate FDL (aka activate or deactivate features). For the headlights, it's controlled by the BDC which almost always gets updated.

My guess is that BMW probably realized this "trick" and decided to ignore the VO codes stored locally in the car and just use the VO codes stored in their servers. Of course, we need a bigger sample size to see if this is just a flub for the people who couldn't get it working recently, or if this trick no longer works.

Arkhi - That’s a possibility too. At least it seems to be leaving prior coding in place if that is so….for now!

I wish they would just sell the option to turn this on formally in Connected Drive. I’d pay whatever.
