Yeah no joke. There is always at least one or two in the same spots every single morning. I started seeing a lot more bike cops but now that the weather is getting super cold (for cali weather), I see maybe one bike cop a week.

Just made me wonder if those speed guns actually work if you point them at the mirror haha.
I have never tried, but they refract. That’s how we get the reading. We need visual confirmation, so we don’t use the mirror. Our visual confirmation coincides with the reading on the LIDAR.

I figured as much, that's why I was kinda confused. So I guess he was clocking people coming south.

I guess one more thing to be on the lookout for haha.

I always tell people to employ this rule: if you ever see a cop parked somewhere observing traffic, never speed by that spot again.

If we go to that spot once, we’ll go there a hundred more times.

Sorry if this has been asked before, what is the fastest speed you have let a speeding violation go on their way for?

It depends, but usually a car will catch my attention if it’s traveling significantly faster than surrounding traffic. I’ve let people off with warnings who were 20 MPH+ over the prima facie limit.

$120 fine and two demerits. Plus, the driver is required to clear his car of the snow before leaving. Lots of those drivers on the road after a storm.

We had a conviction in our small town because a college student killed a pedestrian in a crosswalk because he couldn't see out of all his windows like that picture. It's annoying just clean your car off.

Definitely negligence. That was a rightful conviction.

Speaking of pedestrian in crosswalk, last night I was driving wife into town. We have an empty two lane road that many drive 60 on (45 limit) that slows when entering town to 35. I mention this because many people are still fast after the limit drops.

It was just getting darkish and I entered town in the gloom doing (shocker) 35 cause I am old and vision works but isn't like when I was young so I don't push it. Wife says watch that woman with the dog. I'm like what woman? Turns out there is a guy with a dog in the crosswalk which I didn't see in the gloom. I mean he COULD have made it harder to see if he was wearing camouflage but not much harder. Thankfully I was going slow and he was in the middle lane with his eyes open so no conflict or problem other than I was legally probably supposed to stop and let him cross.

I won't debate who was in the LEGAL right here but that guy was an idiot out walking in the gloom with darkish clothes.

You would have been at fault due to the pedestrian being in the crosswalk (…assuming they were crossing with the right-of-way), but a contributing factor to the crash would’ve been low visibility. It should be common sense to wear more visible/reflective clothing when walking or running at night.

I always give pedestrians the right of way, even if they’re not in the crosswalk. But lately the majority of them do stupid shit. Please explain to me how someone dressed all in black insists on doing their morning walk in the dark in the freakin street when there is a sidewalk? Or crossing the street, on a blind curve in the dark dressed all in black with your hood up and your face in your phone and never looking for traffic. Or just having their face in their phone and stepping into the street without looking. I see this every single day.

I’ve been meaning to post this rant for a while but didn’t know where. Rant over.

You’re not doing a bad thing by deferring right-of-way, but our tendency to do that is what makes pedestrians believe they have the right-of-way 100% of the time. They are often in shock when I cite them. The same goes for bicyclists.

What is going on in Tennessee? Are any other states as bad with arresting sober drivers?

Recent Nashville TV story

That’s really weird. I’ve never in my life arrested someone who was sober.

I'm guessing that these departments have extra patrols funded with grants to fight DUI, and need to make arrest statistics to keep their funding.

Back when I was in college when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, our small town had an extra overnight officer's overtime pay funded on Friday and Saturday overnights for a few years by a state Stop DWI grant.....

I assumed that to be the case, but unsubstantiated arrests don’t help the cause. It stains the profession because people lump us all in as one, and we are not trained the same.

NYC subway Marine hero found not guilty despite Alvin Bragg et.al. shenanigans. I hope he gets the Congressional Gold Star.

That truly makes me happy. Finding him guilty for protecting others would’ve made good Samaritan’s even more hesitant to help than they are now. I’ve rolled up on scenes where everybody has their cell phones out, but are unwilling to help while watching somebody be brutally assaulted. Weak!……but understandable when considering legal liability.

The day that this incident happened, I said that this dude deserved a ticker tape parade for taking action against a documented threat.

Per one of the NYC TV talking heads at noon who was in the courtroom, the gallery erupted into cheers as the not guilty verdict was read.

Of course, just like the OJ trial, the drug addict's father already filed a civil suit last week to make Penny have to spend even more money defending himself.....

Have you ever pulled over a firetruck/ambulance that wasn't rolling lights and sirens?

I confess I am concerned about backlash of helping. Especially since I am older and weaker now from surgeries. I remember years of martial arts training but I would need to use strikes and finish the deal right away cause I can't risk getting dragged onto the ground. And that is bad optics. This a little bit restores my faith in humanity.
