Will the Supra and Z4 use the same engine? Is it possible that they are using different engines?
One article quoted in this thread says a Toyota guy said 450hp. Latest Motor trend has the z4 and Supra at 380hp each with same motor. And above it says the CGI iron block. Why would Toyota bother with CGI when bmw readily makes aluminum motors with 380hp and over already? Ugh! |

This Supra will likely use the same b58 (or b58xxx cousin) that's in the Z. Toyota keeps saying it'll be tunable like the MKIV supra. If there is a lower trim, it'll use the bmw 4cy 2.0 turbo. Part of the world will get the 4cy option, not sure if US will yet. There could be a higher trim (possibly called Gazoo, Toyotas racing name), if this comes out, it will be limited and likely 450hp. This could be an S58 or a Toyota modified B58 variant and will supposedly be very tunable and this is where the CGI iron block might appear. The car is slotted to weigh 3000-3300 lbs and it will only be a 2 seater and not come with a manual tranny. The Auto might be a ZF8 or might be DCT. Car is likely to run with a Cayman S around a track and have a very low center of gravity. Technically its all just rumors but stuff is getting narrowed down and we should know more in October. Car is likely to be for sale in US in spring 2019 as a 2020 model. |

I'm pessimistic but wishing a set of golf clubs fit inside this Supra. No ability to fit my clubs is the only reason a Cayman isn't already in my driveway. I play way too often to buy a new car that requires I drive my beater Suzuki SX4 to play golf.

It's simply not going to be cost-effective to build -- and before people bring up the I'd-pay-extra-for-a-manual argument, realize that you make up, at most, five percent of the potential market for a sports coupe in that price segment these days. That's one in 20 buyers, max. Is a large car manufacturer going to invest in commissioning, R&D, testing, tooling, government certification, and so on to sell, at most, a few hundred extra cars per year? Ummm ... no. Both Toyota and BMW make cars to sell them. They don't make cars to cater to fringe customers that represent a dying feature set (and that statement is coming from a former die-hard manual guy) for a myriad of very legitimate reasons. Would I like to see a manual Supra? Of course. But I totally understand why it's not going to happen.

From what I understand the Supra will be auto only when it first rolls out. However, lemetier posted a transmission chat that is showing a second tranny is being tested. Tada san also said in multiple interviews that a manual isn't ruled out. So we'll just have to wait and see.

I’m starting to feel pretty disheartened with this Supra. When you can get a 450+ hp Manual camaro ss1le for around $45-50k that runs circles around this 330-380hp?? Toyota that cost $60k+ it just doesn’t make sense.
The last Supra was setting the pace for the competition. This one looks about last in the pack. When you start cross shopping $60-70k cars and the power and performance that money buys this Supra doesn’t even make the list. It’s closest competition looks to be a $35k automatic 370z. I’m disappointed! |
