Tell me you and your wife didn't hike up all that way from the village below.

LOL ! no we didn't Mark. We started from below the summit of Pico Arieiro and had a long, hard walk to the summit of Pico Ruivo, then returned to Achada do Teixeira. Only around 12km, but lots of climbing.

Nacreous clouds

The weather here is very, very stormy today with 80mph winds and frequent hail, sleet and snow showers.
But just before sunrise we were treated to an amazing display of iridescent nacreous clouds. Here is one of the most colourful clouds, which was almost directly overhead.
Shot from my front door as it was too bad to venture out !

Nice shots, John and Alan!

I haven't contributed for a while. Engine from a F.E.8 replica @ the Smithsonian. I just now noticed that a light or something fell into the exhibit, but....I'm feeling to lazy to correct it in the pic.

I need much more practice when it comes to shooting the northern lights. I have several pics, though none compare to the "magazine quality" ones I see when doing a google search. They are however mine that I took by myself, so that in itself gives me a sense of pride.

Great aurora shot John, you've even managed to capture The Plaiedes in the shot, well done. As photographers we are all our greatest critics John. This is a great shot and one, of which you should feel justifiably proud.
If ever you need 'aurora inspiration' have a look here at the work of Ole Salomonsen -

A great guy and an incredible aurora photographer.
Another great bird shot Ed - keep 'em coming !

Here's another one from yesterday morning.
It was taken just before sunrise on an extremely stormy day. The gulls seem to be enjoying the spectacle, although I didn't venture further than my front door for this shot.
A friend of mine, who is far more knowledgeable than me on these matters, tells me they are Polar Stratospheric Clouds and rarely seen in the UK

Today has been cold, wet and windy, so I've spent some time processing some aurora shots ready for a slideshow I'm due to give to a local group shortly.
I thought you might like to see this one as I quite like it. It was taken last September and is a little unusual as it was taken quite early in the evening, when there was still some daylight. More usually the aurora keeps rather more unsociable hours and tends to appear around late evening / midnight / early hours.
This was shot about a mile from home, looking due north across The Moray Firth towards Wick and John O'Groats.

Awesome shot, Alan. I'd print that as large as it would go and hang it where a lot of people would see it.

Great eagle shot, Ed. Looks like he's trying to show you some hot watches.

"Psst, hey buddy, check these out."
