Ripple will cripple. Drink too much of it and you will be violently sick for the rest of the night, and the following day. Speaking from experience here.

Born and raised in SLO. Retired from Cal Poly 12 years ago after 21 years of service in ITS. Spent 23 years prior to that in retail consumer electronics.

One of the doctors my wife worked for lives in one of those homes in the background hillside in your first photo.

Question for the U.S. Medicare crowd (those over 65): I've had the shingles vaccination but believe that Shingrix offers even better protection. When I inquired at my primary care provider office, they indicated that it would be two shots, each $100ish. As a military retiree, I do not have Medicare Part D, which would cover Shingrix -- instead I have a pharmacy benefit (with copay) through Tricare, a military medical benefit. So I end up in the "uninsured" category for Shingrix.

I feel my shingles vaccination has got me covered somewhat. I'd love to get Shingrix for the extra protection -- I hear shingles is pretty nasty -- but am loathe to pony up the dollars. Anyone care to comment?

That sucks that you are not covered. I'm a vet but all my drugs are covert by the Ontario government (over 65), no wonder my tax are hight

If you ask anybody that suffered from shingles they would have love to have get the shots even at a cost of $200. Get it if it's only to relieved you worries.

Shindrix is the very best with two inoculations two to six months apart. Shindrix introduces a dead virus.

Zostavax, which is no longer offered was a one dose introducing a live virus which caused too many side effects.

We recommend it to all our patients over 65. And it's free for Canadians residents.

You may also inquire about the pneumonia vaccine at your age.

I had shingles when I was probably 60 or 61, I am 65 now.
I was told last week that it could flair again, damn.

Are you sure your doctor understands how Medicare and Tricare work together? Did they try to submit that $100 charge to Medicare and Tricare and it was not approved?

I am retired US military on Tricare for Life, and I’m also on Medicare. I never have a copay for any treatment, as long as it’s from an approved Medicare provider. I only pay a pharmacy copay if I go to a civilian pharmacy, and it’s quite small (maybe $20 or less?). I can also avoid a civilian pharmacy copay by using the Tricare option for prescriptions delivered by mail, and for most drugs they send a 90 day supply.

In my case, Medicare first pays as much as it approves, and Tricare pays all of the remaining bill. If Shingrix is an approved preventive treatment for Medicare recipients, then I believe Tricare should also cover it.

Oh, yeah... I get everything; I'm up to date on pneumonia, RSV, COVID, etc. If I go to the Shingrix web site, it tells me that 96% of people pay nothing: those with private medical insurance and Medicare patients with Part D (drug) coverage. Well, I have drug coverage through the retired military angle (Tricare for Life like Bc2005) which works great for medical care -- no copays, etc. but for pharmacy benefits, I pay $12 for a 90 day supply. Major savings for some drugs, though I don't think I take anything too expensive.

The pharmacy benefit is set by Congress. When it started there was no copay at all, then $5 each time, then $7 and now $12. Who knows what the future will bring?

I've got the same plan you have. Nothing out of pocket for almost all medical care. Shingrix is apparently an exception, as it is not covered by basic Medicare Part B. It's been more than a year since I inquired so I think I will touch base with the clinic again just to make sure that the situation on Shingrix hasn't changed.

I don't trust any "vaccines" anymore. Too many lies and exaggerations. The china virus "vaccine" isn't even a vaccine, it's a shot just like the flu shot. I've never had one of those either.

I realize that it sucks to have to pony up a couple of hundred bucks for something that damn near everyone else is covered for, but having known several people who have had shingles I would urge you to bite the bullet on this one if you must. Try everything you can within the system first, but if all else fails, don't be a stubborn martyr.

Yep, shingles are bad, m'kay. Never had it, don't want to get it.

Shingrix coverage under Medicare just changed within the last few months. Last year I would have had to pay for it myself at ~$400 a shot, but now it is covered. You might want to revisit the question with your insurers.

I guess that it's time for a reminder for those who have forgotten about the glory days of BP-OT, when the site had a thriving Politics & Religion section. In a few clicks of an admin's mouse, it was gone forever and replaced with a sticky post on the top of BP-OT titled:

Why the Politics & Religion section has been removed.

Feel free to review the contents of that post before donning a flame suit.

There are 22 different moderators listed on BP-OT, and thankfully I am not one. That beng said, the odds of posting something that offends one of them with that many different moderators is not in anyone's favor. For that matter, I personally live in fear that one bad slipup will result in the entirety of BP-OT vanishing forever just like the P&R section.

As I'm sure that Esteban and a few others will attest, banned camp is a lonely place to be...especially around the holidays.....

I, too worry that this fun place will be gone one day. Too many people get offended too easily these days. Let's just have a good time here.

And please, don't give 'the powers that be' any ideas.

Just a quick affirmation, not to push further off old people topic, a nurse said this exact thing to me last week with regard to the shot doing virtually nothing to prevent the illness, only mitigate it.
