I see this all the time. It's hilarious. Tailgaters have to be among the lowest IQ people on earth. Personally I lump them in the same boat as drunk drivers. Tailgaters have just a callous disregard for human life (and yes, this includes cases where they're tailgating other bad drivers who are actually blocking the passing lane). I know, I used to be one. It's disgusting and I'm ashamed of my behavior in hindsight.

Personally, most of the times I just speed away leaning on the horn and flipping them off... Not worth the time, effort or risk. If they start attacking, remember: It's battery until you fight back and they'll bear all the brunt of the law. If all else fails, I do have a pocket knife. Not as good as a gun but it'll make the majority of knuckleheads think twice.

(I wrote this on a previous thread but i'll write it again. I made some changes so my story can be more clear)

A few weeks, i was driving to Church peacefully minding my business, from my rear view mirror i see an SUV speeding up to me, swerving lane to lane.

I was on the left lane, getting reading to merge into i95 which is a left exit ramp. So the SUV pulls right behind me, it was a man and his wife, looks like they were late to some kind of event. He was tailgating me like crazy, this guy was literately inches from my rear bumper.

He starts flashing his headlights, giving me signals to move out of his lane. I was like hell no, i'm not moving. If he's such in a hurry just go around me.

He continued tailgating me, we were both doing about 70mph, The posted speed limit was 65mph.

So after about 15 seconds, his police light comes on. I was like huh? WTF... this has got to be some fake cop. There's been plenty of those around my area. If you go on youtube, you'll also see videos of people using fake police lights to pull people over as a prank.

After about 20 more seconds of driving, it dawned on me, holy shit, this guy is a real cop.

So now he's pissed and wants to pull me over. I gently, got off the next exit and there were other cops siting at the exit waiting for me. Apparently he called for back up. So i get of the ramp, there are cops everywhere.

The guy jumps out his SUV, pulls out his gun at me.. starts screaming "PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE 'EM!!!!".

I co-operated nice and gently, he comes up to my car, his face was boiling red hot anger. He starts yelling at me, and spit was just flying out of his mouth.
"KID WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU..." "YOU"RE GONNA FUCKING GET IT ASSHOLE... YOU HAD ME CHASING YOU FOR MILES"..."DUDE YOU"RE FUCKING GETTING ARRESTED YOU PIECE OF SHIT"... "I GOT THE ENTIRE STATE POLICE ON THEIR WAY HERE NOW"...

He asks for my lic and reg, i gently hand it over to him. I started explaining to him calmly, that he was tailgating me, i told him "i didnt know you were a cop"... " you were tailgating me and flashing your high beams, which is against the law"... " you have your wife in the car, and your license plates are regular civilian plates"..."so i just thought you were just an asshole jerk trying to bully me out of my lane"

He faced changed a little bit, he takes my info and goes to his car. He starts talking to the other cops. After about 5mins, the other cops all drive off.
5mins later, he walks back to my car, hands me a ticket for $360 (Speeding violation + failure to pull over).

He tells me i'm not getting arrested. I can just see a little bit of guilt in his face. He knew i was right. He calms down, i explained to him a bit more why i did what i did... he says "oh well just check off not guilty, and we'll see you in court"

Just like that the whole thing ended, i put my sunshades back on and went to church like nothing happened.

I called one of my friends who is a cop too, he told me more than likely that they'll toss out the case. I didn't do anything wrong.

I dont want to escalate this case any further because it's so stupid to me. My time is more valuable than a $360 ticket from a jerk cop.
Worse case scenario is i'll ask for charity donation so i dont get points on my license.

For the speeding, like I've been known to do in a few threads, is challenge the equipment.... Start bringing up speedometer calibration, tire pressure on the day of the stop, tire temperature, climate outside, pavement temperature and all that; get creative. But failure to stop: The truth is on your side. I believe that this has a good chance of getting tossed out. Good luck!

wow, what a story.. that really sucks to actually get a stupid ticket like that even though he felt guilty to get all crazy.

i actually had something similar to this situation. I was going about 70 and i wanted to switch lanes into an fwy exit lane and this one car wouldn't get out of the way and it was about 1000 feet from the exit and couldn't see past mine and his tinted windows so i gassed it a bit and went in front of him while i had my signals on. as soon as i merged in and he "stomped" on his brakes and went for another 5 seconds, he speeds up and rides my tail and turns on his police lights and attempts to pull me over to the right.. once we get on the furthest right lane he speeds off from like 40 to 90mph... he had civilian plates on too..

youre completely right.. nobody should ever get out of their cars or even pull over.. just keep driving until that nutcase is gone.

There are people out there who hate to let faster cars pass, you find this type at the race track as well. It must be somekind of a personality disorder.
The other thing they do, they'll be going slow for miles in the left lane then speed up when you get a break and start passing on the right.

It's actually one of the biggest cause of road rage and cutting someone off etc.

Road rage is an excellent language exercise. If the other driver is blond, I'll be explaining his mistakes in Swedish, if he's dark haired, Germany, English I use on Ford drivers, and Finnish handles Priuses. I have had a lot of practice describing their whole family tree and such. As for any other kind of approach, I don't bother. We all fuck up.
