@Foxrus14 knows his stuff. Probably the best advice here in this thread.

As for the stone I got, it was F color, VS2 for clarity, very good cut, 1.5 carat diamond. Not best of the best, but you couldn't tell by looking at it unless you are a jeweler with a microscope.
Where did you get the stone? Are you near Raleigh or Charlotte? Diamonds Direct is awesome!!!

I hear the radio commercials for this place all the time. I have felt inclined to check it out, but haven't had any personal testimonies to go off. Is this where you went? Is the selection and pricing as good as they claim it to be?

It really is the best place I have been to, Hands down. I live about 2 miles from the one in South park in Charlotte. The diamond I bought was ~$30k at bluenile and jareds etc... I paid $23K for the whole ring. they have access to Tiffany's jeweler and they made my setting for less than $1000. At tiffany's the setting is like $7000 just for the band and setting. no other diamonds in it.
If you get a chance, I would stop in to Diamonds direct. I will never buy another diamond elsewhere. I am having diamond earrings made for my wife for Christmas there.

If you are in the charlotte area I can send you to my guy but if in Raleigh area I can't help there.

I will definitely check it out then. I figured they were just over advertising and were going to end up being like Jared or the like, and did not want to deal with anything like that.

Unfortunately I am in the R/D area, it would be nice to walk in knowing I'm talking to the right person from the get go, but I imagine the staff would be able to point me in the right direction.

Awesome! I will probably make a trip within the next month or so. Nothing is set in stone, but I would like to know what is available when it does come to that time. Plus, I'll need options depending on how much I decide to care about my SO the day I purchase.

Thank you for the reference, much appreciated!

If your girl is pushing for a big diamond, watch "Blood Diamond" first. Retailers will say they don't sell conflict diamonds, but the whole reason they're popular is they're untraceable.

Also, DeBeers runs the market and marketing. Rubies are actually more rare than diamonds, but far cheaper due to marketing. That engagement rings had to be diamond is only about a 100 year old idea.

It's ultimately there to look pretty, and money spent on a rock is money unavailable to invest and retire early, go on a better vacation, money towards a house or car, etc.

Moissanite is arguably more beautiful than diamond. Looks similar at a glance, but refracts the light into more colors..more "fire". It's basically silicon carbide- 9.25 on the hardness scale (diamond is 10), so it should be very durable, too. For whatever you want to spend, you'll get a lot more sparkle and clarity. If she's open minded that could be a great option that'll be. Gem quality man-made diamonds are also on the horizon and will make diamonds cheaper one day

We will need pictures of your gf before a decision can be made on what cut, clarity, size, and color diamond you should get.

LOL...what are you guys; on the DeBeers payroll, or just suckers for marketing that doubles or triples the price of a particular stone?

How so? What clue is she lacking? It does its job just fine.

Girl I'm dating now hasn't even worn ear rings in so long the piercings have long since closed, and she's a stunner.

Who has an unlimited budget? Within any given budget, you'll have more sparkle for your money, or have a lot of money left over for things that actually improve your quality of life.

Should of went with the 328i and you would have money left over for a real diamond... Does she know you bought a car instead of a diamond... or are thinking about it?

LOL- I have plenty of cash and I'm not getting married anytime soon. But, why would that be a good call, exactly? What's the advantage, besides being way overpriced for what you get? Why didn't you sell another car so you could throw an additional $30k into a little rock? Even if I decide to spend a given amount on HER, why just get her a sparkly ring when I could get a ring that sparkles even better plus get her something else really cool?

This is the third time you said marketing.

You know that marketing has never had an impact on the price of anything. In the history of any sort of economic system in the entire world. Right?
