Hypothetically, if someone asks me what I purchased/drove, and I told them it was a Honda (nothing wrong with a Honda-great cars) it's would be not a big deal. But when they find out it is a German Imported BMW then they ALL have their opinions. I could have easily purchased ( I was actually looking at one) a fully loaded honda w/ leather, nav for $30k or even a hybrid for over $31-32k. Do they realize that hondas are not cheap econo cars anymore. $$ wise, they are pretty close in price to most german engineered cars out there. So when someone asks why didn't I get a honda I tell them, "why, there pretty much the same price to my Bimmer" |

I was "friends" w/ these 2 guys..weve all known each since HS. Anyway, 1 of them was sort of a prick- he always wanted to be better than everyone. Hes the type of guy who will take pics w/ only pretty girls so show off. Anyway- he stopped being my friend cause i got my car. He said that i was always trying to "mention" it. Well NO shit, its my 1st car, its a bmw.. dude im STOAKED.. so what?? He said that i was trying to "show off".. and he stopped talking to me.. Whhhatever. Then he said yea and (other friend) thinks the same way about you..

I feel ya. Showed up at work in the new 330 after vacation. Just so happens that the week before I got a raise. Thte owner of my company comes up to me and says "I guess we must have givin you too big of a raise if now you can afford that car: I wanted to tell him to go f himself. I've been putting away every penny I can for the last two years to get enough cash for a down payment. Then he was like all jealous that his S4 had a much more refined interior etc. etc. etc. He could'nt just be happy for me.
it's not like he doesnt show up in a new $90,000 car every year.

I'm glad this has been mentioned, cuz I get it, too and really, I can't stand it. I didn't get it as much with my S4 but since I got the 330i, I kinda hear it more often. I park it waaaay in the back corner of the parking structure at work cuz I don't want anyone to see it or anything. I don't usually like mentioning it to people cuz I don't want to get those lectures, either. Who the hell cares, though? It's MY car and MY choice. EFF OFF if you don't agree! Did I ASK? Seriously.
Bella - I have a friend that's kinda similar to that. One of my close friends, despite being a good friend of mine, is totally belligerent with stuff like that. Like, she ALWAYS makes really caustic snipes when it comes to stuff like this. She doesn't even have a hint that I parted out and sold my S4 and bought my 330i, and I was done with all this over a month ago, heh. She is just so snide and stuff, and it kinda sucks to have to hide stuff from a good friend, but still, she's such a b*tch about it, last thing I need to hear is how I'm spoiled and stuff and how nice it must be to, "have rich parents." That's why I like you guys and my other cool friends, they don't hate on me for stupid stuff like this

Part of the reason that I try not to tell people that I am getting a new car.

All of this is very intersting to read. Slightly off topic, but this brings into mind debaging - The whole idea originated in Germany(hence the reason why both BMW/Porsche offer the debadge option on many of their cars) where there are many jealous individuals, so to avoid tension most owners just simply debadge their cars so that some might find themselves hard pressed to tell the difference between models.

oh I like telling people, too, but you just have to make sure you tell the right people. I told all my friends that I knew could appreciate it and be happy for me, but none of the more jealous ones. There's some nasty energies with jealous people, I tell you...best to avoid it as much as possible.

know how u all feel...I also worked my butt off before I was finally able to afford this car. I spent five years as an undegrad college student no less without a car, so I had to depend on others for rides or drive my '91 Pontiac which only went from point A to point B. I saved up for a long time, like many of you, from my job and when I first told people that I got the bimmer, I got the same run-down about how I should have invested that money as a down payment on a house, how I should help my family, etc. (mostly from the older people).
It was kind of funny, the day I went to pick up the car, this lady was picking up her Titanium Silver E90 and it was parked right next to mine. She asked my older brother "oh, is that yours?" He told her "Nah, that's my little brother's" she was like "oh, he's a spoiled one ain't he?" He was like, "Nope, he bought it himself." No offense to those of you whose parents bought yours, but it is an entirely different feeling knowing you bought a car with your own hard-earned money. You appreciate it that much more. |

i never said it was a bad thing, it's just that the stereotype i have of someone driving a mercedes is "look at me, i'm driving a mb". i believe i also think this because mb doesn't offer any manuals, and the ones they do suck ass, so they definitely aren't "driving" cars, they're "status" cars.
