well lets see, boxers, bulldogs, mastiffs were all bred with some form of a fighting dog (bulldogs). pits are the same way. the original breed is bred between a terrier and a bulldog, do you call a terrier SELECTIVE? the reason pits get their name is because pitbulls were fought in "pits" hence the name and were favored among other fighting dogs because of their massive muscles in their head that allows them to clamp down, not lock which makes them lethal. would you be afraid of a terrier? probably not, would you be afraid of a bulldog, boxer, mastiff? probably not since they dont have that rep. so 50% isnt due to their breed, all dogs could snap, actually chow chows are more known to attack their owners than any other breed. to be honest responsible pitbull owners will be the first ones to tell you how loving pits actually are

Yes, they shed, twice a year, and a lot. He's starting to blow his coat right now -_-

They're OK with other dogs. Mine in particular does well with large dogs 30 lbs and up. Just expose them to dogs when they are young and you should be ok.

They are not attention whores, quite the opposite. He minds his own business and plays with himself, but will play with me if I want him to. He only bothers me to go pee (we live in an apartment) and if it's food time. He won't play fetch with me for than 5 minutes before he gets bored and moves on to the next thing.

They're very stubborn dogs, you have to be really diligent in upholding rules or else they'll walk all over you.

Meet Nz or Nzzy and he's turning 13 this year. And yes, he's a pitbull and not a bit aggressive. Silly people on this thread about the myths on pitbulls.

correct! pits are an amazing breed....in my opinion at least..

think of it like this...yes this breed was selectively bred to engage in mortal kombats with other dogs. why where they bred for this? well that goes into bull baiting and why bull baiting was outlawed back in the day...actually alot of dogs were bred for hunting and such game when dogs first became domesticated and helped man in the wilderness....pits, however, were bred for sport....much like the japanese Tosa. in any event, pits were bred to fight dogs. only dogs. they had to be bred to be extremely aggressive toward dogs and the exact opposite towards their handler. their handler had to walk into this "pit" after two dogs have fought without the thought of one of these dogs unlatching from a dog onto the handlers leg....matter of fact, i read one bloodline actually castrated dogs that snapped at their handler and were not able to contribute to their gene pool...because after all...what good is a dog who bites humans when they were bred to fight dogs....i had two pits. they were the absolute worst protectors. yea they barked when the doorbell rang but if you were a friend or foe they would jump and lick and jump and lock and run like a kid in a candy store....

if pit bulls where an horrible breed, blood thirsty killers...where are the stories about them killing kids in the 20s 30s 40s 50s 60s when they were much closer to the original game bloodlines??...the original fighting bloodlines?? that original stock is a thing from the past.... replaced with backyard breeders who breed theses 110 pound blue pits whose heads looks like hippos ha... and the results are the horrid actions frequented by most media....

So true. They are a lot like cats. You almost have to beg them for attention. It's quite sad. They are extremely smart, but very independent. My first dog was a chocolate lab and Shibas are literally polar opposites. I love the breed though.

Shibas are great dogs they shed twice a year, but they shed in clumps so it isn't so bad. They travel really well, and would prefer to be left alone. In the 14 years we had Drifty he only had one "accident" in the house, shortly after he was "fixed" He never got up on furniture, the only thing he liked chewing was toilet paper and high heeled shoes (I don't wear em so it didn't bother me, lol) You rarely hear them make noise, and when they do you know something is really wrong. They are very intelligent and a good judge of character.

In terms of getting on with other dogs Drifty was fine, he actually got on better with larger dogs. The only thing is that they can be difficult so you have to always assert yourself over them.
