Are image retention issues common to plasmas in general? Or are some brands known for worse image retention than others?

Boils down to luck, just like with cars.

My family has owned several Sony's and never had a problem. My friend has owned a Samsung and had nothing but problems.

More like a myth that was propagated during the early versions of Plasma (some 10-12 generations ago depending on make) that never went away.

Retention goes away.
Burn-in sometimes doesn't.

Short answer, no. Brands, Plasma, lately I've only dealt with Panasonic, which mentioned in the post above are fine.

LOL what's the old adage - don't buy something built on either a Monday or Friday...do robots get hangovers?

I just got a 40" LED 3D Samsung and I love it. I looked at the Sony and they are nice but the colors seem to pop better on the Sammy. Also Best buy has some great deals right now. Samsung gets great reviews. My parents have 2 46" Panasonic Plasmas and they are not very good. They have had both of them die in less than a year and the colors and clarity are not that great. I know there are a few plasmas out there that are really nice.

Any HT purist would most likely recommend plasma to someone for the most film like experience. They beat out LCD's in most every PQ category. LCD's are thinner and use a little less energy though.

For under $1,500 the Panasonic 54" G25 is impossible to beat.
Exactly right, Plasma's are still the industry standard. Those Kuro's are discontinued but I'd love to have one of them. I saw one in person and it seriously is leaps and bounds better than any image I've seen. The blacks are so black, it is like no light is coming out of the screen and the colors are sooo pure is nuts. Panasonic since then bought the Pioneer plasma line and patents, making Panasonic, most likely, the next best plasma out there.

Plasma's need a lot of care though. A proper break-in period is needed (something like the first 100 hours) and custom image adjustments are needed to achieve the highest cinematic result. just do a search in avsforum. Custom settings are available for almost any tv out there.

ya I was told that my Samsung TV needs to be used for 90 days before fine tuning is going to be able to be done. There are a lot of settings and you can change the way the blacks look and there are several diff modes to put the TV in. I have only had it for 2 weeks and the first 3 days i could not understand why I was doing so poorly at Call of duty, and Red dead had this horrible blurrrrrr and laggggg. I didnt know it had a game mode setting. That fixed it and the lag and blurr went away. Avatar Blu ray looks unreal and the 3D setting on it actually works to a degree even though the movie is not rendered for it. My Girlfriend has Alic in Blu ray on the way from netflix and I am going to see how that looks in 3D mode. I checked it out at Best buy las week when they had Alice playing in 3D mode and it look good. You really need to have the lights off in order get the full 3D experience. Bright lights wash the screen out too much.

Monster vs Aliens in 3D came with it and it is well done with only a few scenes where 3D does not work right, but that is the fault of the movie. I noticed this in Avatar and in Alice at the theater. Several scenes did not look 3D at all.

I read that there is a new line of 3D TV's on the way that will not require glasses coming at the end of the year. They are going to be several thousand bucks though.

When I try to watch movies using my PS3 connected through HDMI I'm only getting simulated surround sound so I can barely hear the main characters voice. I'm only hearing everything around them. Anyone else have this or know how to fix it. Normal HD tv is fine.

Are you running a full 5.1/7.1 setup?

Hey guys! I bought a Samsung 46" series 7000 tv. I love the picture but one thing is driving me CRAZY. Every time there's a really dark scene and something bright moves, the screen flickers between brightnesses. Does this happen to your tvs? I'm thinking about returning mine but if this happens with all LEDs then I guess I'm going LCD

I don't know about LED tv's, as that's a rather new technology, but LG makes some of the best LCD TVs out there. You may just get a high quality big LCD instead of throwing more money for the LCD.

Sony. . . I have the Bravia 52" LED and the screen is a flat piece of glass from corner to corner just like a Mac. Picture is great but lacks in sound quality.

Plasma is the way to go if you are looking into the picture quality.

Just got Samsung 7000 series 50" plasma, and it rocks my world.
It's thin as LED tv, (1.25") and it features 3D technology as well.
On top of that, I've got a samsung blueray player and pair of 3d glasses for free! all for $1600 as a promotion package.
