Somewhere between 140-150.... At Road Atlanta.
I can't say with any degree of accuracy how fast I was really going... I sure as sh!t wasn't looking at my speedo.

Imagine the stretch of the westbound 210 freeway between La Crescenta and Sunland. (about 3 or so miles at around 4:00 AM) I took the Viper to around a buck forty and was concerned that that squirly SOB might decide to swap ends on me at any given moment but I decided to accelerate never the less. At around 160 it occured to me that if I continued I might (probably) die a horrible death, as that car preferred a glass smooth surface (short wheel base, quick steering and super grippy tires.) If you sneezed at that speed, it could change 2 lanes in a heartbeat.
The problem is of course, is a clutch pedal that is so stiff that it will wear your ass out driving around in the city, and a bone jarring suspension that will make you dread the next even slightest ripple in the road. Add to the fact that it's a gas pig and it has a relatively small fuel tank and it becomes something of a chore to own and operate. I talked to Carroll Shelby after he drove the Indy 500 Viper Pace Car, and he told me that it was the most unforgiving high performance car he had ever driven. I would concur, as it demands your complete attention 100% of the time lest you get yourself in serious trouble. |

MOD LOCK?
Quote:
I gotta throw the cold blanket of reason on this thread -- now that it has shifted from a thread where folks swap tales about days gone past, to actual attempts to beat personal speed records here and now as the thread unfolds. I personally would like to see a Moderator lock this thread. Mostly for my own selfish personal desire not to have any role in an innocent family of 4 getting killed, just because someone was trying to hit high speeds on a public road so they could post their personal speed records here. It's nothing personal against you, colonel1961. Just one President's opinion. (And I'm not some anti-speed Nazi who just doesn't want to see anyone have any fun. I've personally checked to make sure that "sharking" a US E34 535iM does successfully remove the speed limiter and allow the car to do the full 153 mph that the Euro version could do....) |

My previous car was a Nitrous equipped Dodge Viper. She was putting out 700+ HP and up at the track, I took her into the 170's.
High 10's in the 1/4. 0-60 in 3's. A total beast. I'm looking forward to the 1 arriving. I could use a bit of refinement!! -Rob |

To that end, whether you beleive it or not, I am very cautious at speed, hence my approximate reference to the speedometer. And the roads must be fairly straight and empty for a mile or so ahead. It is also why I mentioned the weather - clearly a deterrent. Perhaps I should have been more clear in my reasons for posting. I was not, per se, trying to exceed any personal best - merely enjoying the rush of speed and the machines capable thereof. To wit: I drove at 130 mph+ on the way home from a meeting ten minutes ago in my F355B - empty lanes and perfect driving weather. Appreciate your concerns. Peace. |

When I was working at Santa Monica BMW, I once sold a new 7 Series to an out of state, high ranking US military officer. They wanted the car delivered to them in Arizona. (to avoid paying California state sales tax)
Somewhere in the Arizona desert (eastbound on the 10 at midnight or so) I opened it up to around 140mph. It felt something akin to sitting in the Lazy-boy recliner in your living room. Later that morning I did recieve a speeding ticket for doing 88mph but since it was in Arizona I never paid it. |
