Mine is quite loud, and it makes my passengers any myself a little uneasy. It should like someone is playing bongo drums thru the speakers...I simply cannot believe how loud and resonating the sound is.. almost like it is happening in a reverb chamber.

The vent ducting acts like a reverb chamber unfortunately.

This is an interesting observation. The i5 is my first EV, and it’s also one of the few that’s an electrified ICE car (meaning it’s a 5 series) rather than something like a Tesla which was designed as an EV. It makes me wonder, if we had schematics, what all differs between the ICE and BEV versions.

Just like where stuff is. I mean I know it’s got to be somewhat different, I just don’t know where it all is. Meaning, how is that ductwork/positioning different? Maybe it’s all closer to the dash in the EV. No idea.

On the home front, I think my dealer is still waiting for parts also.

Here are some interesting pics of my M60 getting the "knocking" A/C part replaced. My service rep is great and knew exactly what the sound was. He told they had fixed a i7 and i5 with same issue. I was relieved after hearing that. I was initally hesitant to do the fix b/c he said the entire battery has to be dropped to get to the part that need replacing. He assured my the tech would have been extensively trained. These pics show the battery dropped from bottom of my M60. Fingers crossed.

I brought my car in for the knocking issue and the service advisor just told me pretty much the same things:

1. There is a service bulletin for this concern.

2. Parts are not readily available, but must be ordered.

3. It will require removing the high voltage battery to access the HVAC ducts, thus requiring a few days in service.

Anyone have a copy of the service bulletin? I'm starting to hear it pretty regularly now.

Now that the weather is warmer here I noticed this sound today and it is just like the video that was posted earlier. Anyone have a copy of the TSB??

Ha! My video is viral! Kinda. Not really.

I’m still waiting on parts. I actually did the conversation with the rep thing recently… got an email from BMW offering to have a “factory rep” (translation genius) call me. We talked about the sound and he had me send in the video because they’d heard about it but hadn’t actually heard it.

Waiting on parts here. That is a painful-looking fix. They just have to eviscerate the car to get to the part. Ugh.

Sorry if I missed this but do we know if the new builds after a certain production date have this “fixed”? My car is likely to be built in the next 2-3 weeks and curious about whether BMW fixed the part on the assembly line.

I'm hearing this, too. It seems to mostly happen when the humidity is high and the AC is cranked. Fix looks unpleasant...

My i5 was produced mid to late March and I have not yet heard the sound but it's only been not even 2 weeks.

I’ve not had this either and I took deliver in November - it’s not got super hot in NorCal yet, or maybe its just not humid enough here?

Good point about the humidity. In southern California where I live it's rarely over 30% humidity so if the sound is related to humidity I may not hear it.

So far, I've had the car since March 21st and I have not heard that sound and I've almost always got the climate set to auto and it usually provides cooling. Fingers crossed that later in the summer when it's really hot here I don't have the issue.

Air conditioning? It has only been in the 50’s this week. Summer usually starts around July 4th. Actually, I did use the A/C one day. Didn’t hear any dripping sounds.

I just got my i5 M60 back from the dealer. A coolant leak on a hose under the hood made me take the car for servicing. Talk to the service department about the noise and they were well aware of the problem. They had a service bulletin for the fix. Apparently i4 and i7 have had the same issue. The problem was an A/C drain line that needed to be replaced with an updated version. No more knocking noise after getting the car back.

Mine is fixed too. I posted pics in this thread, showing the entire battery pack dropped from bottom of i5 M60. I have no issues now other than the nagging "Activating Service" that I was told would go away with next OTA. I asked my dealer to install new update and they refused. Was told they are being advised NOT to install new update b/c of chance vehicle cannot charge at home. Seems a little BS to me, so I am patiently waiting for OTA

Sounds good that things are fixed. Do I just ask about "that A/C knocking noise"? If there's a reference number or something they could look up it would be helpful. Maybe there's something printed on the invoice or repair sheet that would help?

Here is the paperwork from the dealer related to the a/c knocking noise. The referenced number SIB 64 01 24 might be a number that may be used when you gonto the service department.

Thanks for the service bulletin! Perfect information. Tells me I shouldn't have the problem because mine was born on Feb 1 2024. :-)
