Wow, I'm amazed they walked away. Great Porsche workmanship, and even better luck on your dad's part.

Sad reality here, is that if the police do not note the roadkill on the accident report, insurance will rule against you. Cops will also think you were doing something stupid prior to the accident. I'm thinking that the reason is that theres a lot of people who tend to blame accidents on imaginary animals. This will probably piss PETA off, but going into the deer would have been better =X

Iowa Department of Public Safety
Kevin W. Techau, Commissioner Wallace State Office Building Des Moines, Iowa 50319 Telephone Number: (515) 281-5261 Facsimile Number: (515) 242-6136 DPS Logo For immediate release: James J. Saunders, SAC Thursday, October 5, 2006 Public Information Officer Des Moines, Iowa (515) 281-5615 "DON'T VEER FOR DEER" SAFETY CAMPAIGN PROVES SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCTION OF DEER/CAR COLLISION FATALITIES Des Moines, IOWA --- Last year an estimated 7,303 drivers reported collisions with deer in Iowa, causing an estimated 643 injuries to motorists. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources estimates that 11-15,000 deer are killed on Iowa roads each year as a result of collisions with motor vehicles. In October 2003, the Iowa Department of Public SAfety organized a "Don't Veer For Deer" safety campaign in conjunction with the Iowa Department of Transportation, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, insurance companies, AAA Minnesota/Iowa, local law enforcement and many others to educate the public about this problem and to equip them with information that will help them to prevent serious injury or death. Since implementation of this program the number of fatalities resulting from deer/car collisions dropped 60% in 2005 (4 in 2005 compared to 10 in 2003). Preliminary numbers for 2006 indicate that there haven't been any fatalities resulting from deer/car collisions, however, deer/motorcycle collision fatalities are on the rise with 5 so far in 2006 as compared to 4 deer/motorcycle collision fatalities in 2003. The months of October, November, and December are the most dangerous for deer/vehicle collisions. As a driver, there is certainly little you can do about the deer, but you can be more aware of their habits and reduce the risk of coming in contact with them. However, should it happen, not veering greatly reduces the chances of losing control of your vehicle. The following tips are offered to drivers of motor vehicles and drivers of motorcycles to reduce their risk for deer crashes: Motor Vehicle Driver Tips: * Improve your vision, use your glasses, and maintain a clean windshield * Become familiar with deer crossing areas along your routinely traveled roadways * Slow down during the hours around dawn/dusk and during nighttime travel * If you see one deer, assume more may soon cross the roadway * Increase your following distance with fellow motorists * Obey all traffic laws, especially speed limits, to ensure you do not over driver your headlamps. * Wear your seatbelt - Every Trip - Every Time! Motorcycle Driver Tips: * Become familiar with deer crossing areas along your routinely traveled roadways. Avoid heavily populated deer crossing areas around dawn/dusk and during the night. If you must travel in these areas reduce your speed and watch for deer. * If you see one deer, assume more may soon cross the roadway. * Increase your following distance with fellow motorists. * Wear protective gear while riding on a motorcycle. * Obey all traffic laws, especially speed limits, to ensure you do not over drive your headlamps. In the event you encounter a deer in your path, "Don't Veer for the Deer." Most deer crash injuries and deaths result when drivers attempt to avoid the animal. This action often results in drivers losing control and colliding with other vehicles. Veering can also cause your vehicle to enter roadside ditches, strike fixed objects or roll over. |

Like a few others have pointed out, DO NOT swerve wildly to try to avoid a deer. Hit the bastard, then worry about the damage later. I have a friend that got very badly hurt in a 04 330xi sedan because he was trying to avoid the damn deer and went flying off a hill bouncing off trees on the way down.
Glad to hear your dad and cousin are alright, it looks like Porsche still builds one fine automobile. |

Nice, but the handling will be nothing like the Cayman unfortunately. But it does have the sound.
