I work for my self so managing my time is what it's all about, I take winters off BUT Spring'ish to November 1st I work 6 days a week 70+ hours
I have a number every season I need to meet, house payments, savings, vacations etc. After I make my yearly # I go in slow mode, more money is great but I don't need it, ok to then fly to the keys randomly in October or Cabo for some deep water fishing or plan Euro Delivery for a new BMW When you have enough income to live well, enjoy what you do and save a good amount what's the point of more income? You can only eat 1 steak per night I'm not going to be 2xs happier with 2xs more income I asked how many hours bmw employees @ the plant work, 35 mother fu**ing hours! we laugh at that back in the states but when I asked how/why Is that possible? Answer: Sanity, We SHOULD Balance work & life better |

Mixed feelings.
I have massive graduate school loans and won't fully start my career until I'm nearly 30. But I'll be able to catch up within a few years. I can live wherever I please and work as much or as little as I'd like. Such independence is priceless. Still, it sucks losing so many years of potential income and starting in the trenches. |

I'm a doc. 33 y/o. 35 hours a week. I like seeing patients but the paperwork and charting are beyond boring. I purposely work 40 miles away in a small town so i'm not as busy as other docs who are seeing 2x as many patients as me.
i don't find my job very fulfilling... but i get paid great for the amount i actually work and it allows me to pursue my main passion which is cars.

I'll be starting my IM Residency in a few months. Any suggestions for which field provides a great lifestyle/salary balance? Not going to some prestigious academic program so I'm sure Cardio/GI are out...not that I even cared for them in the first place. Honestly thinking Hospitalist or outpatient practice. This is just a means for me to live comfortably and pursue my passion for cars. |

plus when i finished IM residency at 29... i was completely burnt out on studying/school. the thought of grinding another 3 years to make an extra 100k a year before taxes didn't seem worth it. I had already given up my 20s to school and didn't wanna give up my 30s. hospitalist is another good gig if you don't mind the hours and paging. My brother does that and makes a good 50k/year more than me. Works 12 hour shifts for 2 weeks straight, and then is off for 2 weeks straight.

I'll probably end up settling down in Southern California so my COL will be much higher than yours. Hopefully I can get with a babe in the same profession to boost income. |

Work as an Engineering Manager in a Specialty Chemical Plant. We are privately owned, but have facilities in the US, Canada, South America, and building one in the Middle East.
It has its ups and downs and I have lots of deadlines as both the IT and Maintenance department report to me. My only gripe is that I'm the only one in my role of responsibilities that does not carry the title and extra pay of VP. But I think most of that is because I'm the youngest member on the management team. Pay is still really good....and I can always do private consulting on the side....but I did that for a while a few years back and figured out I liked my free time more than I liked the additional income. |

Starting my new job tomorrow. Even though at the time I didn't feel fortunate, I do recognize I should be. From the start of my job search till accepting an offer was about 2 to 3 weeks. I also had another offer which I turned down and my current company countering. Things have been very challenging at my now former employer where they've had a significant issue with employee retention. And of course when it rains it pours. I had another company wanting to hire me but the interview process started too late for me to ignore the offer I had accepted. And on my last day at work, I got two inquiries about possible positions.
I was really miserable at my old job with all the stuff they were dumping on us. Cutting back half of the engineering staff and then telling us we had to pick up the slack and we were not being paid on the extra work. Plus there was compensation they still owe me in the 5 figures which management chose not to pay me on. |

I've probably only had one job I was happy at and that only lasted about 2 years before the company went to shit. However I think the difference between that job and others I've had was just the people I worked with. I was friends with pretty much all of them so coming into work was like going to hang out with my friends.
I also got to work on many different things vs the job i got after that one where I basically had 1 task to do, over and over and over again. I really wasn't friends with anyone (didn't dislike anyone, just not like people I would chat with or hangout etc), however it was an extremely easy job, paid well and gave me the free time to start my own side business which is what I do now full time. However now that I've been working for myself for a few years I worry that if I ever had to get another job... I don't think I would make it. Just the thought of it makes me nauseous. |

I've never enjoyed any job I've ever had. I only work for money, if I find money better elsewhere I go there. My company knows this and they pay me very well.
I dunno why people think they should enjoy their jobs. Really never understood that. I'm not even that old but maybe its a generational thing? I dunno. |

After everything settled with my new job (clearing background check really), I put in my notice at my current company yesterday. After quite a few meetings they countered today with a promotion with 33% salary increase plus company car and additional benefits.
Shit. |

I left my career of 11 years because I was miserable. Crazy long hours, never home for holidays and with the most childish miserable humans on the face of this planet.
Learned a skill, started my own company which was successful off the get go but I was in over my head and didn't really like the work. It was a good transition medium. Granted I'm 35 but I saved enough to cover bills for a couple of years, sold my business and I'm in school for medical imaging. I love the work, patient interaction and technology behind it all. I'm being recruited by multiple hospitals and even the school to teach after I graduate. Who would have thought? I'm fortunate that between my wife and I, we started saving and investing early so we can do what we like and not worry a LOT about money since we live well within our means. |

Were you leaving because of money or because you didn't like the environment? One of my previous jobs, a good friend of mine didn't really want to leave, but they weren't giving him his do (as a Tech Writer I was making more than a software engineer with a Masters) They gave him a $30k/yr raise to keep him and he's now left that company, but still works for another company under the big corporate umbrella. He will be a super high up in another 10 years I bet (we are in our mid 30s.) |

1) the company knows you're a flight risk and may only be retaining you temporarily 2) now that u did accept; they can use and abuse you as your other offer has already disappeared and again they have the upper hand
