And finally, no dash message is going to tell me that my car actually runs cooler in sportier driving modes -- a handy fact to know if, like me, you drive in temperatures well over 100 degrees.

Shall I go on?

Sorry. We'll agree to disagree here.
I drive in the same temps.... you are in DFW? We are going to have to have a beer...

I mis-typed earlier.. I meant oil temp...but you know what. I ALSO would take oil pressure..

it's a freaking DIGITAL dash .. they should be able to incorporate information from ALL kinds of sensors..... with the ability to SELECT or HIDE different options..
So.. if you don't want Oil pressure.. then fine.. but @viffermike and I do.. then we should be able to.

I mean holy crap.. An AIM dash will give you the world..

One more for you:

I don't want a message telling me that my car is in limp mode when I'm in, say, southwestern Colorado, or deep in the Texas Hill Country, or somewhere in the southern Appalachians. I want a gauge so that I can monitor my vehicle's operation in case a reading might tell me when a problem is about to happen -- not when it's already happened.

The key here is a reasonable assumption that the car will be used under anything but a light load. Spirited backroads driving -- whether on a track or in mountains, in a sporty car or in a pickup with a boat attached -- is not a light load. I would consider your M4 Competition to be a sporty car, sedan or not.

You are not the only one.

And how slow are these displays when it's -30 C?

In the future, analog needle gauges will be an extra cost option for a retro look that is "easy to read" and delivers a "driver-oriented dynamic chronometer-style movement". People will pay for it too because it offers individually made moving parts, hence it must be a more expensive premium option

I think Porsche beat you to it with the Chrono package? a very spendy analog clock comes with it!

Just get a Awron gauges and you should have all important CAN informations, 99% of the BMW customer don't need informations you guy's requested.

I see everyone complaining but what I think they fail to forget is that were talking about BMW, So... the display will probably be part of the never ending options list.
I think they'll use their current "traditional" looking digital gauges as the base setup.

I actually don't like this. Maybe they think they're catching up to Audi digital cockpit, but I don't like Audi's either. It makes a good first impression and looks fancy, but makes no sense to me to squeeze all that info into the instrument cluster and then hide it behind the steering wheel. I much prefer the center display up in my face holding the extra info, and keeping the instrument cluster simple as BMWs current generation.

You got a good point there.. even an iphone going berserk on cold days, cant think of how this digital dashboard would behave. I hope they will use top of the line displays that are responsive at extreme temperatures.

With these updates being so frequent it would only be fair that BMW allow cars to receive software updates to get updated visuals. Seems pretty insane that if you buy an M2 Competition your instrument cluster is already outdated

I'm with you. These new designs are overly complicated. BMW needs to focus on mean looking clusters that aren't loaded with a hundred unnecessary icons.

Yeah hello Bmw.....Audi, Merc and especially Lexus has been killing the digi-cluster game for years. Levels ahead of Bmw. Stick to analog and keep the important gauges that actually monitor and can forewarn of a coming problem!!!

The pictures are mixed view of a lot of different viewing options. Actually I think it looks a lot cleaner because of the non-google-earth-view compared to Audi's digital cockpit.

Stayed here as well but I think the Audi model looks great, but after initial impressions have worn off it doesn't really make a huge amount of sense to cram all that info and pictures in behind the steering wheel

what are those? (2012, 2015, 2018)
does this mean you can choose to display the old clusters with gauges?
