Last weekend I spent a week away at a really nice hotel that offered valet parking. it was $25 to park your car per day and the value of my car is $50,000 so i would just pass the valet attendant 5 $100 bills. I did this twice per day everyday for 7 days so you do the math.

Thats the proper ettiquette in valet tipping, if its too much for you then park your crappy car on the opposite street
Fortunately, I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in the U.S.

So I'm supposed to tip $500 every time a valet handles my car? Maybe you meant 0.1% which is fairly high but somewhat in the realm of reality at very high end places. Just think, after 100 valet "touches" you've doubled the cost of you car. Also in this alternate reality do I go by my original msrp or current vehicle value?

I've honestly never heard of this. Which etiquette book are you referring to?

One of my cars is a company owned car, and only my lady and I are authorized to drive it. If I let anyone else drive it, even a valet, I risk losing my job. Any time I've told a valet that, I've never gotten any push back. I explain the situation and then assertively ask where they'd like me to park.

More power to you if that's what you feel you want to pay, but a parking valet would end up being one of the highest paying jobs in the US and everyone would be one, like realtors in the early 2000s lol.

You know what, you seem like a person that knows what he wants from life.
You seem like you take no shit from no one.
You are the person I some day hope to become
You have inspired me to stop the crazy 1% tipping

I thank you Sir

when I checked my wives beat up, dented, 2006 caravan, I gave the guy (when booking) in 10 bucks, he looked at me as if to say... you sure? LOLZ

I usually give 10 maybe 20 bucks, and every in or out 5, that's reasonable to me

I wouldnt tip in advance, because different people are involved.

Kinda like tipping housekeeping, a different maid every-time,

I used to work valet when I was 18 years old and in college. I always drove people cars with respect because I love cars and I would not someone dicking around in my car, but I can not say the same for the other guys I worked with. Also it does not matter if you tip the guy $5 or even $20 when you hand over your keys if they have a loose screw in there head money is not going to change what they want to do. Try and find the oldest guy working there, usually those are the people who need that job and money and wont risk messing around...

Just my 2 cents...

Also a $2 tip is fine...so many people wouldn't even leave tips and if you dont leave a tip generally they wont take the valet tag out from under your wiper blades...

Just got back from San Antonio. Hotel had self parking, but the valet parking was obviously superior. They had the two bottom floors of a large parking facility across the street. Paid $30 for valet parking, and then tipped $10. Super friendly valet guys!

Actually can you do the math for us. How much exactly did you tip for the 7 day stay?

You will want to print a kbb estimate and provide with your 1% tip for good measure.

I had one valet go nuts on me because he thinks I should tip based on edmunds. Bastard.

What a noob - everybody knows kbb and Edmunds are both overpricing cars, obviously influenced by the valet-owned media. You need to do a thorough review of recent sales, adjusted to local market trends, or all the valets will be laughing at you behind your back ("that guy in the 5 series overtipped like he was driving a 7 - doesn't he know that the x-drive isn't worth anything in Florida").

But seriously, isn't this like tipping the waiter 1% of the value of the lot the restaurant is on? If you are going to troll, at least stay out of the 'bigfoot and aliens' level of fantasy.

I would tip $20, and ask if you could park it. If your car looks like you take great pride in it, Washed/Waxed, no dents/dings, clean interior, the valet will understand and take care of you. If your not allowed to self park it, the attendant will park your car in a good spot. Trust me. It's the one's that brag about their car, and say " Take care of it, and put it in a good spot." Then stiff you. Now would you listen, and do what the owner asked? I think NOT... Valet is like any other service industry. You take care of them $$, they take of you.Trust me.
