Of course you can. There was plenty of time between the initial occurence to brake to a controlled stop. The rider did not brake -at all-, not even the hands on the brakes. He was not watching, or he used exclusively the rear brake. Had he reacted promptly and brakes with the front brake he had enough room to stop.

I have the same philosophy driving as i do riding: if you're going faster than the rest of the traffic, or behaving in any way that people wont expect, the onus is on you to leave enough room to react and anticipate people cutting you off.

Especially on a bike, because you're the one who's going to end up dead.

I had one rule drilled into me when I was learning to ride: Act like you're invisible to the cars.

I mean, obviously the car in front is at fault (im assuming it was illegal to cross into that lane?) But the rider should've been riding more defensively.

Does anyone else here naturally count cars / watch exits when driving? If he wasn't on autopilot he should've at least seen it was congested ahead and slowed for the path - or if he was driving in 'sport aware' mode, would've seen that the lane that the car came from was open and he had an exit by tucking between the same two cars that car did.

Blaming the other car and posting this shit on youtube saying "watch before you merge" is the attitude of a rider who's going to an early grave.

He was too busy hamming it up for his Youtube channel to notice what was going on around him. As others have stated in this thread and watched some of his videos, he could have been looking to make a situation to add to his posted videos of yet another clueless cager, but got in over his head. Also, the hypocrite complains about someone crossing the solid lane marker yet in one of his videos that I saw personally he does the same thing. Plus his intro to all his videos proudly shows him riding on the sidewalk. Yeah, he's the epitome of riding responsibility.

I was in my S4 and this happened to me and I avoided a collision. I wouldn't have been going that fast with stand still traffic in the main lanes because I know some idiot could just pull in. Didn't watch the whole thing, didn't read the whole thread. Has anyone mentioned the fact that the biker was going considerably faster than the other traffic? Hard to judge from a video but he was passing everything.

A former coworker was riding his motorcycle home one night in the rain. Came to a traffic light that changed just as he and the car ahead approached. Car stopped, he couldn't. Flew over the roof and landed on the hood of the car!

I could have avoided that collision. Been in many situations, while riding, similar to the video. Been cut off, turned left in front of me, hard braking in front of me etc....etc. yet I managed to avoid a collision using hard breaking and maneuvering. If you watch the video the rider did nothing other than run straight into the back of the car. Maybe he used his rear breaks only. If that's the case then he is more of a dumbass........because anyone that rides knows that your front brakes gives you the majority of your stopping power.

what he should have done was, accelerate, and wheelie up and over the trunk of the car and continue over the roof of the vehicle, then hood, and fly off the front hood, and keep on going. Thats what I would have done

50/50 to me, both at fault.

The car for obvious reasons but the rider was a fucking idiot too. It's pretty clear that traffic is beginning to bottle neck and he just goes barrelling in at way, way too fast a speed into a situation where this could happen.

My gut reaction right from the start was to slow down as he gave himself zero margin.

As a rider myself who spent many years carving the traffic through Southern California, the biker should have known better than to be going that fast, especially coming up to slow traffic regardless if his lane is open or not. I've noticed this same mentality with a lot of bikers lately blasting through traffic and splitting lanes. This is the perfect example of the risk you take when you aren't considering your surroundings.

Don't get me wrong, the driver of the car is clearly at fault but this is just a reminder of how exposed you are as a biker to the smallest lapse in judgement.

Being in a fast moving lane next to a slow moving lane is the number one scenario that scares the piss out of me when riding. The differential in speed that this guy was carrying was what lead to him being in this situation. The car was at fault for pulling blindly into his lane but the guy on the bike was 110% responsible for putting himself into a situation that he could not correct for. He should have scrubbed some speed and moved over to the left to give himself maximum time to react should this exact scenario unfold.

Some of us ride sport bikes with ABS and others of us ride big heavy choppers that dont change direction well. Others still ride old clapped out POS bikes with bald tires and sketchy brakes. Some of us have years of track experience and others are beginners. The point is, you have to ride knowing the limits of your bike, your skills, and your environment. This guy was riding outside all three, in my opinion.
