Back in '14 I bought one of the first 2015 mustangs to hit the road. My relationship with that car was like being married to someone, but deep down being in love with someone else. I never did connect with that thing and even though there was nothing really wrong with it, I couldn't wait to get out of it.

2008 STI. Subaru made it less raw than the previous years and it felt like a tin can. Never felt one with car. My E92 M3 followed. Rest is history.

I thought long and hard about the question in this post. If you count out the cars I've used as DD's at one time or another (I had only one of those that was a HUGE regret), I would have to say my previous 2012 135i. I kept lying to myself the entire time I owned it. Telling myself I loved the car, but the truth is I never connected with it (as others have said about their most regretted). In retrospect, it didn't handle well at all in the real world. The ride was too harsh despite replacing the springs with progressive rates (shocks wouldn't have helped) and non-RFT's (MPSS). The word "Boo" would cause the back end to show instability at almost any speed. Bone stock and, then, with PPK1, way too much power for that chassis. I even noticed that it wasn't as stable at high speed (140 MPH+) as I felt it should've been. I never really walked out of my house/work/etc., looked at the car, and thought "Damn, that car is MINE".

Funny. We had a 135i and a Z3 M Coupe at the same time and that's a great summary of what I didn't like about the 135i. Still a better car than our F30 though, at least the 1er tried to be fun, even if it wasn't very good at it.

2008 Subaru STI

I was looking for a new Evo X in 2008 when they were doing 0% financing. Must have went to the dealer a half dozen times to sit in them and look around. Oddly enough I just couldn't get comfortable in the car and they wouldn't let you test drive them at the time. Never felt confident enough to pull the trigger.

Then, just for shits I stopped by the Subaru dealer next door. It was owned by the same company and also offering 0%. They had a new white STI based model for $30k and it just seemed to fit me more. I bought it the next day but quickly grew tired of it. Added a Cobb AP that helped a little but wasn't a fan of the power delivery and the more I looked at the interior design, the more I wanted out. Then came all of the ringland issues. I traded it in 4-5 months later on a Mini Cooper S, knowing I'd continue to modify it and wouldn't be able to cover the cost of a new engine if catastrophic failure happened and warranty was denied.

Sold my 91 Acura NSX (worst decision ever, BTW) and picked this up as a cheap DD that I'd modify a bit to add some excitement. Bought it and immediately had it chipped, Porsche BBK and suspension work done. Went for a few drives through Skyline and it was cool for a few months then I sold it. Too slow, too nose heavy, kinda boring and had a dated interior.

Dealer tried to cover up some major issues, I had it for two days and forced the dealership to adhere to their return policy. Spent 6 hours in the dealership forcing them to take it back.

Was the headliner falling off by the rear window blocking vision out the back? That was one of my favorite "features". A truly flawed car that was still fun if your mind is in the right place.

I get why enthusiasts complain about details; they want perfection and why not. Cars are so good today compared to the 1970s that we have gotten used to really great cars. Now we complain about fake sound, steering, and the location of the screen. I used to complain that my VW would hydroplane and would go straight on the freeway in the rain even when I turned the wheel. My solution was to apply brakes to put enough weight over the front wheels so the car would actually turn. We've come a long way.

This was the second gen Celica. The first gen looked amazing, like a mini-Mustang, very sporty. A friend had one in high school, and I thought it was the coolest looking car at the time.

My first car was a 77' Celica coupe.. Modified the tar out of it... Friend of mine still has it today all these years later. Was a great car. 86' Celica with the 2fse single cam was probably the worst car I ever bought. Engine sucked and had no suspension travel. Just sucked all over.

HA! Almost ditto, except mine was a 2000 Celica GT-S: the first year of the last model. The car was a high-revving HOOT, handled phenomenally, and looked way sharp for the times. But my 6-4 self had no business in it. I got rid of it as soon as I was upside-down on it (didn't take long) in favor of a MkIV GTi 1.8T, which I proceeded to modify heavily. It was nowhere near as sharp a performer, but it was a better car in almost every respect than the GT-S.

The only cars I've ever truly regretted are a pair of MT Jeeps: A Liberty that was stolen and wrecked, and the Wrangler that replaced it. I owned them primarily to tow my track bikes at the time. HATED both. Only reason I had them was because at the time I was a vehement MT-only guy, and Jeeps were pretty much the only SUVs sold with MTs at the time. Stopped riding, traded the Wrangler for a Mini, and never looked back.

I was buying and selling C5's back in the early 2000's. Hard market for Vettes. I have owned about 6 and funny the lady who owns the gym I used to go to said only old bald men drive Vette's. She was more accurate than I thought. I live in AZ now and that is all that drive them out here. My last toy car I bought was a 911 twin turbo. Not as much power but goes up in value and a much nicer piece of art. Vette's are great bang for the buck.

Controversially, the m240i. But not because it is a bad vehicle.

Unfortunately at the time the waiting list for the M2 was way too flocked. I naively decided to go with the m240i believing it would not differ too much from the M2. My first mistake was speccing the car in a rush without the proper configurator running on the website for visual guidance and instruction.

I ended up missing out on the Adaptive Suspension and the Tech Package. Ideally the two most fundamental accessories the car needed to compete with the M2 for different reasons. The passive suspension is essentially a nightmare if you daily drive on bumpy roads. The standard Business package was very disappointing. The 6.5 screen covered with ugly plastic was an eye-sore. No Apple Car Play and the old iDrive system. Additionally the business package gave me the analog speedometer, basically the same one you can find in a 06' e92. An 11 year old car.

In all honesty, the M240i with adaptive suspension, sunroof & professional navigation is without doubt a better daily driver than the M2. My setup was leaning more closely to the M2 without all the M mechanical parts. Even if I installed the M-performance suspension, Limited-Slip Differential, better tires etc. I still wouldn't have gotten close.

I also chose AT over MT, which removed 75% of the engagement.

It's my biggest regret because it's genuinely a great car that I specced in the most counter productive way possible.

Yep! I went from an '03 M3 to an '04 G35 and regretted it within a few months. I was glad that car got stolen. I went straight back to an M3, and purchased an '05 ZCP.
