The whole point of BMWi is to be completely different from the standard idea of a conventional BMW. These are not volume cars electrified. But created from the ground up in terms of drivetrain,construction and design.
The concept revealed also has a CFRP structure. As well as full EV and PHEV Range Extender. Its the next phase for BMWi to introduce more family orientated concepts.

You know this could just be early concepts that BMW is sticking away with parents for protection and not meant for production.

Our company also patents vehicles we design that we don't plan on making to protect design content or ideas, their could be things in this design patent that is used for protection and used at a later date.

BMW only has to file patent papers just before its shown to the public, so for it to be this soon sounds more like a misdirection tactic or something of the sort, since I'm in the business it wouldn't surprise me.

i5 I don't get. This should be the mainstream - destroy Tesla 3 model. Instead it looks like a design disaster. There is no justification for ugly here.

I think the feedback you are getting from this forum of enthusiasts is that we like BMW's traditional lines and shapes. You will have more success converting this crowd (and is suspect a large majority of American buyers who are looking to replace existing BMW models in our garages over the next few years) to electric models if you sell car designs that continue the evolution of your existing segments. Why not make an all electric that looks like a modernized 3 series, 5 series, and 7 series?

Yea figured even something like this would work better....... It's got the feeling of the "I" brand with a little tradition sprinkled on top!

Its statements like this that make me hate bmw. The whole point is to be different? I thought it was to sell cars? If your only goal is to be different, then you are done. You are different. Good job.

Over 7k sold sep 2015 YTD, more than 2 series, more than 6 series, more than 7 series. Even though is still a roller coaster numbers aren't that bad

I think what the market wants, is a EQ type EV, not a 5GT on i drugs.
BMW are coming up with alot of SUV these days, since that's the marked that expands.
Then you guys are showing the i5, why?
It's an answear to a Q nobody have asked.

I get it if i is going to be exoctic and not intended to be a cash cow. But the investments that's been done these last years, should translate into something decent in the future, that might be i or be a part of the mother brand BMW. The point is, give us BMW followers something attractive inside the EV mold, not something that's not an BMW.

Here in Norway the sales increased from 293 in August to 522 in September, obviously thanks to the introduction of the 94Ah model during August. Maybe that's the number they've been looking at

Very excited about the i5. Design wise it should be fine, BMW know what they are doing and it's all about reducing consumption. I just hope it gets a bit wider tyres than the i3 even if consumption will be slightly higher.

What's more interesting is the technology inside.

And that's part of the problem.
Ever wondered why Tesla sells so many electric cars compared to say the BMW i3?
1.
The Tesla look like and behave like normal cars in regards to space, loading capacity, etc. The BMW i3 does not.

2.
They have decent electrical range. 500+ km NEDC or 350-400 km real world (think winter in scandinavia with heating turned on, summer in spain with full A/C, etc) is more or less a must.
The BMW i3 does not have the range.

3.
FAST CHARGING NETWORK! And by fast I mean 100+ kW.
This is incredibly important. Unless BMW get that it needs real fast charging and some form of partnership with a fast charging network, its electric cars will never succeed.

Yes! Give me a fully electric 5-series touring size car that also fulfills point 1-3 above and I will change to it from my Tesla in a heartbeat.

Yes that's cool and all, but all of the eco cars to date look like ass. Prius, Volt, etc. the exception is Tesla. Just because it's green doesn't mean it needs to look like a turd.

ummm 6 series and 7 series are WAY more expensive and never sell in huge volume.
Also there are huge incentives for electric cars right now and not much competition. when the competition arrives and incentives disappears the i3 will be in the waste bin.
Even BMW admitted that the i3 sales numbers is disappointing.

When the time is right... which will be a couple years from now when Tesla can even begin to think about small Sedan production, why wouldn't you just go " mainstream - destroyer " with a 3 series that's fully electric ?

Agree. I have an i3 as well as my m235i. You know what it is? A stop gap that somehow leases to a $212 payment, until the model 3 gets built.

Whether BMW realizes it or not. Electric cars will replace gas cars. They better get on board with a decent product.
